The international community must take immediate action to ensure all countries reduce their usage of fossil fuels. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Agree
The extent of damage to the environment has been colossal, due to this material: land, marine and air
Accelerating global warming by releasing greenhouse gases
Fear of exhaustion that could make survival of future generations tenuous
Disagree
Lack of affordable alternatives are likely to affect the poor regions, and they might not be able to sustain economic development
Exacerbating environmental complications have prompted calls for the global community to work for mitigating use of carbon-based propellants world over. While this move can be justified owing to the urgency to protect the planet, this might be too harsh a step considering that several regions, specifically those impoverished, lack access to eco-friendly alternatives.
The support for this proposal stems from the deteriorating condition of the environment triggered by the surfeit pollutants being emitted into the air, further disseminating into other spheres: land and marine environment, turning surroundings into hostile, and predisposing all manifestations of life to disease, disorders, and deterioration in physical conditions. For instance, there have been confirmed reports of marine life, especially crustaceans, like crabs, shellfish, coral reefs, and so forth, perishing due to the calcium in their shells dissolving owing to the carbon laden sea water.
Similarly, soaring global temperatures augmented by discharge of greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, from industry, transport and electricity generation promise jeopardizing human life. To exemplify, rising sea levels, abrupt climatic shifts, have made coastal areas susceptible to being submerged, and agriculture vulnerable to disruptions owing to unannounced droughts and floods.
Nevertheless, complying with such norms might be out of reach for the deprived and developing societies, for they lack access to practical alternatives: green technologies are in nascent stage and prohibitively expensive, and are only the forte of rich nations who are unwilling to share. Thus, without sharing of resources and expertise, embarking upon such an endeavor, however noble it may be, will prove to be futile.
Hence, despite sounding judicious, such undertaking must not be made functional in earnest, and the destitute regions, representing a majority of the global community, must be afforded appropriate resources, technology and acumen, before initiating any action.
