Developing countries should be encouraged to implement high tariffs to grow their local industries. To what extent do you agree or disagree? ielts essay

In recent years, imposing high tariffs on imported goods and services has become a common suggestion for underdeveloped nations, to protect the domestic industries. While this arrangement seems feasible, governments must act prudently to circumvent its adverse impact.

To start with, economists assert that levying high tariffs can help the infant factories survive in a competitive world; they lack capital, raw material, cheap labour and a proper scale to do the business. Likewise, it also encourages customers to buy local products; products, sourced from other parts of the world, will become more expensive, resulting in building home-grown brands. For example, India levied tariffs on automotive a few years ago, precipitating setting up its own manufacturing unit of Hyundai and Maruti, now the top selling brands for vehicles. In addition, it also generates employment opportunities, boosting the economy of the country.

Nevertheless, the skepticals term it as a recipe for disaster; other countries will also retaliate by deploying similar charges, leading to trade wars and strained international relations. For example, USA and Canada tariffs attack is one example of retaliation, where both countries ended up putting their own taxes, resulting in a downfall of imports, and promoting international tensions. Apart from that, if local businesses are always protected by this approach, they may lose motivation to do better, provide excellent quality, and to innovate. Also, there are more chances to increase the prices of local products due to lack of variety.

In hindsight, I think there is nothing bad in imposing levies on merchandise, brought from other nations, to protect native companies as it can help eradicate unemployment and bring wealth to the country, but regimes should be cautious while applying such a policy as it might adversely impact the financial growth in the long run.

Innovation is often driven by the pursuit of profit and economic growth. However, some argue that it should prioritize addressing social and environmental issues. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

A faction of society believes ingenuity is motivated by monetary rewards, others feel the primary aim of it should be the upheaval of society and ecology. This essay shall discuss both viewpoints to elucidate a plausible conclusion.

To begin with, proponents of environment professes that novel technologies should aim to be the cornerstone of tremendous growth of mankind as a whole: it is the advent of these marvels that can afford an easygoing lifestyle, wherein tasks requiring mammoth efforts can be achieved quickly: enhancements in construction technologies can make building skyscrapers effortless, something that nowadays accounts for decades of construction, causing wastage of natural resources and manpower, and insurmountable harm to the environment.

Additionally, incrementing productivity in the workforce should be another goal of inventive endeavors, like machines being equipped to automate recurring tasks, allowing workers dedicating resources and time to intellect-intensive undertakings, to gain dexterity and traits of multitasking, thereby enabling them to dedicate quality-time to their social commitments. Similarly, appropriate efforts should be charted for eco-centric researches for the preservation of the planet and alike conservation of its pristine natural habitats, carbon-neutral manufacturing processes to ensure perpetuation of a hospitable environment for living beings.

On the other hand, the advocates  of innovation-driven economy eulogize the umpteen venues of socioeconomic growth that have been generated for everyone - profits for businesses, employment for millions and revenues worth billions. This further benefits governments by letting them net colossal revenues and strategically positioning these activities for social transformation. According to a survey conducted in India, technological advancements added thirty hours a week of manpower, on average, in the last decade.

Overall, ground-breaking research equally benefits humanity and ecology, besides creating economic value and monetary surplus, stimulating striking a balance between both the aims to bring the best out of each novel endeavor.

Nowadays not many young people choose to work in the farming industry? Why do you think that is? How could young people be encouraged to work in this industry?

Contemporary  times have seen young people becoming less inclined to engage in the agricultural industry. Numerous factors can be attributed to this growing trend that are discussed in this essay with suggestions to tackle this situation.

To begin with, a lobby opines that youngsters want to alight on a career in blooming industries. This can be ascribed to multiple causes: farming is considered a tiresome job needing tremendous amounts of physical work. They must work in fields in all unfavorable weather conditions such as in hot summers and cold winters. Young populace does not like to work in such tough conditions. Nowadays, many young individuals holding professional degrees prefer jobs that are less demanding manually. Thus, they like to embrace employment offering them comfort as well as handsome incomes.

Additionally, in modern times, agriculture has not remained a profitable sector. In many sectors, government policies are against the interest of farmers, compelling the new generations to lose their enthusiasm to till the land for their livelihood. Anti-farming policies have led to various suicides by farmers in many areas which affect the young minds adversely engage in their work.

A lobby of experts assert the most imperative step would be educating people on the functional areas of importance of this activity. This can be executed with the assistance of introducing it as a mandatory subject in the curriculum; and by helping the young generation by affording them the latest machinery along with financial support. Also, more seminars and workshops should be organized for the learners to encourage them.

To sum up, it is the need of the hour that youngsters should show their involvement to revive this dying sector. Better investments and guidance can motivate them to choose it as a career.

Some people think that water is the most important natural resource, while others believe that other resources such as oil and gold are more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people think that water is the most important natural resource

Water is important

  • It is the lifeline, a resource without which no life can exist on the planet. It douses thirst and also keeps people and animals healthy

  • Without water, the landscape of the planet would turn barren, making it hard for humans to grow their food

Why Gold and oil are important

  • They hold an economic value

    • Where the gold reflects prosperity

    • Gold has always been used a means of trading, even in modern times the value of currency partly depends on the gold stocks available with state

    • Oil drives modern economies and all related functions - Lack of oil can send the economy in a tizzy

  •  Oil serves as facilitator of every possible function today.

A tug of war has ensued when it comes to deciding what holds more relevance for society, water, or gold and oil. While some are inclined in favor of the former,  economists lay emphasis on abundance of the latter two.

A common perception  surfacing today values water more than other any other naturally occurring mineral, for it this substance that has helped life persist on the planet and in current times when its availability is becoming tenuous in many parts of the world, sustaining even the fundamental functions such as affording fresh drinking water is becoming an uphill task for the regimes. It is feared that if this condition endures, chaos will descend and social unrest will become a common sight, and countries could be seen going to war.

Moreover, water underpins growing food an essential function that makes it possible to feed the growing population and also the livestock that indirectly affords mankind the much required nourishment in the form of cereals, fruits, vegetables,  meat and milk, to name a few. Above all, this gift of nature influences and regulates climate: its presence allows greenery to flourish, providing the surroundings with the required humidity and also inviting precipitation.

Having said that, the other school of thought considers gold and oil to be more crucial in modern times since where gold defines the prosperity of a country and helps define the value of its currency, oil bolsters various functions ranging from producing energy to rendering transportation of man and material possible; thus, the dearth of these can precipitate into a crisis.

In hindsight, the current discourse seems ludicrous and lacking in substance since each of these materials have their own significance. If one provides life, the others augment development and sustenance of essential economic endeavors.

Nowadays organizations are setting up factories in countries different from where their head office is situated

Nowadays organizations are setting up factories in countries different from where their head office is situated. Are the advantages of this more than disadvantages?

In contemporary times, a new trend has started where renowned companies have commenced setting up their manufacturing units in other nations. This perspective is considered to be laden with certain benefits, but this also has a potential to cause harm as well. In subsequent paragraphs, I will elucidate both sides before concluding.

To begin with, a prominent school of thought propounds that expanding businesses to other regions provides an opportunity to multiply the profits. This is feasible because of the manpower availability at cheaper wages and most importantly resources, due to this, the initial investment cost is remarkably reduced. Further, this also helps other countries by creating employment for the impoverished. For illustration, a recent survey conducted by BBC revealed that Zara has reduced poverty by 20% in Africa by providing jobs to poor people, and the company has witnessed rapid proliferation in their profits too.

However, a lobby of experts asserts that managing business in other countries brings unforeseen risks which could have immense detrimental effects. Any major or fatal accident inside the premises will attract the unwanted attention of local authorities giving the latter an opportunity to tarnish the image of the company, if not bribed as per their requirements. This all is possible because of the difficulty of implementation of health and safety policy. Moreover, such an arrangement also exposes organizations to financial scams committed by permanent local representatives appointed for liasoning who can misappropriate the funds.

Overall, I will conclude that although expansion of business may bring unbearable consequences, the positives surely have an edge over the negatives as it ensures employment across the globe. Hence, in my opinion, setting up factories in different parts of the world is a good option.

In many countries the proportion of older people is steadily increasing
Ielts Essay Aged population proportion
In recent years as the technology fuelled medical care has facilitated longevity, many countries across the globe are witnessing a demographic shift leaning in favor of elderly people. This has intrigued several social scientists, as they set out to unravel the associated benefits and drawbacks of such a trend.

It will be not be very hard to enumerate the brighter side of this phenomenon: an increasing proportion of aged people in the society means more and more people with enhanced and seasoned expertise. Such people have spent a life working in their realms and are well-entrenched with the knowledge of their realms. These people even after retiring from their jobs have been contributing to the society by not only working for much less money but also passing down their knowhow to the younger generation.

Notwithstanding the meager benefits accrued by the society, a higher ratio of elderly population has become a nightmare of sorts for the economies, a cause of fiscal strain - even the rich nations are feeling the brunt, since the governments of such countries must allocate higher financial outlay for health care and old-age support services of the senior citizens; thus causing a steep rise in the public spending. It predisposes higher tax burdens on the young tax payers.

Moreover, higher proportion of elderly individuals in a society means a certain slow down of the economy in the long run. The skills pools of such countries face a structured deficit of trained and able bodied manpower that eventually casts an evil shadow on the economic progress; thereby putting the very future of a country in a grave danger.

Hence, I personally feel, higher percentage of aged individuals in the society is undoubtedly a sign of problems to be encountered in future. Ways should be found to arrest the trend of fast dwindling ratio of younger population, or this may threaten the future of the society, as well as the economies.

Some people believe we need to pay higher taxes
Ielts Essay - Should we pay more Taxes?

Growing concerns regarding satisfying needs of populace has encouraged many to suggest that governments should charge more  taxes from citizens, whereas, there are others who are quite skeptical of this. But, what the state should do is a matter worth delving deep into.

Levying higher taxes seems to be quite justified. Inflation  is riding out of control that is making everything dearer, thus severely  hampering ability of authorities to lay even the basic goods and services at the disposal of inhabitants. Raising, or creating new provisions will help generating revenues to ensure appropriate funding for various welfare schemes for public support. It is firmly believed whatever taxpayers shell out accrues back to them in form of benefits.

Moreover, the proposal of raising collections by way of increasing levies is based on the fact that over the past few years, population, especially that of elderly who completely rely on government support,  has been rising exponentially which is clearly offsetting any attempts made in sustaining and improving the level of public support network. Everything costs money, and hence, as the governments are run on public funding, people must readily part with some more to compensate for the pressure created by an increased number of people.

Nevertheless, there are others who feel that such a step will be too harsh a treatment for already over-burdened tax-payers. It would make it hard for them to make adjustments in their budgets; and the authorities should instead focus on other innovative ways to raise money such as participating in commercial activities; running their own concerns that  foray into  profit making exercise.

Henceforth, I personally feel, exerting pressure on inhabitants by increasing burden of taxes will surely prove to be counter productive, and hence taxes should not be raised.

Many people believe that economic development is necessary for a country’s success
Ielts Essay - Many people believe that economic development is necessary for a country’s success
Every country seeks economic prosperity, as it guarantees long term benefits for the inhabitants, but this method has always invited a lot of arguments between lobbies of those who see benefits in this, and those who are skeptical  of this way of making a nation successful.

Countries developing their economic might are able to reap rich benefits in form of increased economic activities. This helps in generating employment venues, for high skilled labor and professionals, that offer excellent salaries; thus boosting purchasing power of the consumers, which in turn leads to higher production, business and finally more employment. Governments can also gross higher tax collections that can be invested in furtherance of development, including research and development of better technologies that would undoubtedly help a nation to a prosperous future too.

Similarly, inhabitants of a financially strong economy can enjoy spoils of prosperity and a healthy human development index. Such nations can offer a good quality of life to the citizens in form of better support services, like excellent educational venues and resources, a good healthcare network, appropriate unemployment and old age support. People can also get benefits in form of quality transport and recreational facilities.

However, prioritizing economic progress does have its downside too, since in an attempt to boost development , countries quite often tax and damage environment beyond repair. Establishing industry and commercial locations; creating quality dwelling areas for the inhabitants, etc. results in clearing of  forest, thereby destroying natural habitats and damaging ecology. Moreover, as a nation progresses, riding on a wave of consumerism, pollution registers a spike bringing along damage to all three spheres of environment.

Henceforth, despite carrying numerous positives, focusing exclusively on economic progress can prove to be expensive if other aspects of progress are ignored.

Aims if Advertisement
Ielts Essay - Aims of Advertisement
In an era, when we are surrounded and influenced by an unprecedented flood of consumer goods, many experts feel that this trend has been created by extensive use of advertisements by various consumer goods companies.

The content of ads being published telecast and aired clearly evidence the real intent of consumer goods companies since the adverts are cleverly planned and made to create a craving among the consumers. The planners of publicity campaigns use various means and methods to lure the customers generously, like convincing the consumers to buy a product through repetitive content, use of pseudo experts, etc. that highlight the benefits and  the need of consuming the products manufactured by a specific company.

Moreover, the publicity of consumer goods is only done to raise the turnover by penetrating diverse market segments. Use of celebrities, noted public figures, etc. to create visibility for goods in a market, is a common practice, which companies plan and implement very carefully and smartly, e.g. parallel adverts publicizing a toothpaste in various states of India portray regional stars who enjoy a high visibility in their own regions. This kind of strategy helps companies to create a niche in diverse markets at the same time.

However, many feel that objective of advertising is not so evil as it is projected. Publicity is a dynamic way of reaching out to masses spanning across diverse geography in the shortest possible time. Ads simply inform people of availability of alternatives, and decision of procuring completely rests on end-users. It is believed that decision of buying something actually depends on prevalent trend, financial resources, and readiness to commit funds to buy.

Hence, I believe that the primary aim of publicity is simply to create awareness and inform the consumers and not raise sales.

ielts Essay - Second Hand Goods
The trend of purchasing freshly manufactured commodities seems to be losing steam as more and more are opting to procure used items. Many experts are perplexed by this strange swing in preferences, and are seeking concrete causes for this change. But, whatever may be the case, the phenomenon is likely to drive in benefits and drawbacks.

The reasons for the inclination of individuals towards used goods are pretty obvious. With the weakening economic sentiments, and rising cost of living, the priorities are registering a flight away from conventional beliefs. People try to make most of it within their disposable incomes and prioritize most critical components such as education, nutrition, clothing, shelter, etc. All other things can wait or if they are somehow necessities of lesser priority, procuring used goods seems to be an attractive option since these do not cost arms and legs.

This phenomena is definitely carrying numerous benefits, the most prominent being considerable fall in the pollution levels. Trade of pre-owned goods means lesser first hand goods being produced in the factories. This clearly implies that less and less fuel and energy would be used in the production, which would ultimately be interpreted into reduced emissions.

Notwithstanding the advantages, with the second hand goods being in vogue, some sectors and people are bound to suffer, as lesser sale of newly produced commodities would not only severely hamper the manufacturing and commercial sector, in terms of quantum of trade and business, but also lead to a widespread unemployment. This is surely to jolt and jeopardize economic progress of many nations, involved in supplying raw materials and manufacturing goods.

To conclude, as per me, the reasons for such purchase decisions are obvious; however, despite having a negative impact on the economy, this new phenomenon would deliver innumerable advantages in the long run.

Economic progress is one factor that is being considered to measure the success of a country
Ielts Essay - Economic Progress and Others Factors

In the modern era, when each of the countries is trying to gain prominence on the global level through economic progress, there is an opinion building up among some sections, which feel that economic progress is not the true parameter of success. As per them, there are other more essential elements, which play a far more important role in the development of a nation.

Development of a country in financial perspective can never be taken as a true indicator of a country’s success and prosperity as economic performance has a very small role to play in overall progress. Some people feel that until and unless, the principles of social justice and factors like equal opportunities for all, are truly implemented in a society, whatever economic prosperity is garnered, will prove to be worthless and futile.

On contrary, some strongly advocate economic affluence as being a true element of accomplishment for a country. They feel that, social equality and justice can only be proliferated to distant and remote sections of society, when the governments have enough money to invest into the endeavors which encourage such noble activities that spread awareness among masses.

As per several social thinkers, other more vital elements which play a far more essential role in prosperity in a country include education, health and harmonious living. These people feel that the countries which can ensure equal opportunities for all the inhabitants irrespective of their religion, caste, creed and cultural backgrounds, can only be counted as truly affluent and successful.

To conclude, I personally feel that all the elements, which make a country and its natives prosperous and influential are entwined closely and cannot work independently of each other. It is therefore, not advisable to ignore any of these essential components.
