Many countries today are experiencing problems associated with noise pollution (excessive noise above a normal background noise).  What are the causes of this phenomenon, and what effects does it have on the people affected?

The contemporary world is facing a new form of pollution emanating from noise, primarily due to human activities such as traffic congestion, construction, loud music, and so forth. The affected populace faces physical and psychological health risks. In the following paragraph, I will discuss the reasons and how it harms individuals and society.

To commence with, the primary  cause of increased decibel levels is traffic chaos caused by cars, trucks, trains and aircraft occurring owing to horns, engine sounds, especially in urban areas. As per studies, most modern urban locales are exposed to  ceaseless deafening humming of vehicles and blaring sounds of airplanes flying over cities.  Moreover, factories and construction sites, where heavy machinery is used: generators, cranes and drilling equipment,   create intense loud sound throughout the day. Moreover, in weddings, festivals, parties and other events, people often play music at deafening volumes, making the surroundings noisy.

Consequently, this pollution affects people profoundly in a myriad of ways, prolonged exposure to loud noise can lead to tinnitus, and later result in  loss of hearing ability, particularly the vulnerable sector, including juvenile, the elderly and pregnant women. In extreme cases, it can lead to hospitalization. Additionally, it raises stress levels and causes anxiety in every age group. In 2023, a study conducted in  Northumberland Hills hospital   found that loud noises were one of the common reasons for frustration, stress among children. Furthermore, high pitch sounds affect students detrimentally as they are unable to focus properly on their studies; consequently their grades in exams suffer.

In conclusion, noise pollution is mainly caused by transport, industrial and commercial activity, and irresponsible behavior of households, and is harmful for physical and mental well being. Therefore, governments should take appropriate action by imposing fines and making strict laws against it.

Most pollution, especially air and water pollution, is caused by industry. If we want to protect the environment, we should make factories and other forms of industry pay of all the pollution that they cause. That is the only way to make sure that the owners will make a serious effort to reduce the pollution that they cause. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Yes this is the only way

  • Many assume Imposing an environmental levy on them would persuade them to act and switch to greener standards. When  their produce will become expensive, they will be forced to adopt measures
  • They would be able to appreciate the damage their activities are causing to the surroundings

NO this is not the only way

  • - The ground reality is far from being rosy: the industry owners the proposer of this policy are assuming constitute the whole sector.
  • - The manufacturers and the industry owners will pass the burden  to the consumers by manipulating their products - quantity and quality
  • - The best way is to engage business owners in these endeavors and make them partners in projects aimed at protecting environment
  • -Rendering them inducements such as financial benefits  for shifting to ecologically sustainable methods

There is a general perception that levying environmental tax on the industry is the best tool to induce manufacturing units to embrace methods to mitigate pollution, but others are skeptical about this. I completely fail to concur with this arrangement since it will not yield desired outcomes. To begin with, companies not following environmentally friendly procedures must be fined for the damage they have bestowed on the planet; this will not only cause them to abandon their harmful methods but also reduce the future damage to nature in terms of air, and water pollution. No one would like to be penalized in an era when awareness about the green environment is rampant, green levies will not only make produce expensive to buy but also unpopular among the enlightened people. This will persuade industrialists to switch to modern techniques and greener methods. Having said that, there are some who quash the former view, they think such a move is likely to remain ineffective; businesses will find some other means to escape from the fines. They will pass on the pressure of the extra financial burden onto the consumers by raising the prices marginally, and continue with their outdated methods. There is a need to vest responsibility onto the producers to persuade them to act prudently and realize the extent of damage their activities are causing. They could, for instance, be allocated areas around their units which have to be taken care of by them, both in terms of economic and environmental aspects. To cap it all, disputes aside, this policy is likely to fail in persuading manufacturers to adopt greener methods to alleviate emissions and improve the surroundings. The state should instead resort to more innovative strategies that entail active participation of the industry.

Light pollution (excessive light during night time) is a form of pollution that distresses many people, especially in modern cities. What are the causes of light pollution, and what solutions can you suggest for governments and businesses to take?

In the contemporary era, a new form of pollution has emerged in urbanised locations owing to the utilisation of lights intensively. This essay shall discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and render some proposals for the state to surmount this growing issue.

This sort of pollution can be attributed to several factors. The incessantly rising crimes, especially in the metropolitan areas has turned the authorities quite apprehensive by virtue of which they install a plethora of lights to keep streets, alleys and even main roads well illuminated to mitigate the incidents of burglary, mugging and several other horrific crimes which usually takes place during the night. Moreover, the spiralling need to stay in limelight forces companies to slog hard round the clock in order to attain visibility among their targeted audience which  leads them install large well illuminated billboards and their signboards that emanate bright luminescence, and over and above using of intensive lighting to keep the factories well lit to enable the workforce to work and produce day and night to meet/satiate the growing demand.

Besides this, urbanites are influenced prominently by night life; therefore, they indulge themselves extensively in celebrations, during the night, such as marriages, parties, get-togethers, and so on owing to which they decorate their surroundings with a variety of lights, thereby emitting pollution in great amounts.

However, the panacea for this predicament can only be found by the joint efforts of the policy makers as well as the enterprises. Government should enact laws and escalate police patrolling at night to render secure surroundings to the urbanites exempted from all sorts of offences so that the support of lights can be abandoned and fears overcome. Furthermore, businesses should employ efficient machinery and manpower as well, to accomplish the work during the day time to avoid the hazardous emissions in the form of light. They should also volunteer to limit the number of hours they light up gigantic hoardings and signboards.

To reiterate, I feel even though light pollution, especially in the urban locales  is surely a growing and a worrying problem, it can be mitigated easily, provided that the state as well as companies don the mantle to curb this ecological disaster by deploying appropriate initiatives, and extend a safe environment to the society.

Ielts Essay - Is taxing Polluters a Viable Solution?
If observed closely, it is quite evident that mushrooming manufacturing units have become a major source of pollution of all the spheres of the planet – air, water and land. This has alarmed environmentalists, and forced them to raise their pitch for imposing tax on the manufacturing sector to encourage erring manufacturers to adopt green technologies.

Taxing the errant manufacturers to compensate for all the pollution, they are creating, would prove to be a highly productive step. The manufacturers would be persuaded to incorporate greener practices, and use environmental friendly material – instead of high content contaminants, as the production process would become costlier, as a result of imposition of additional levies – that might render the final products unfeasible for competitive markets. Commercial compulsions, to keep the costs down in the long run, would force them producers to shelve age old technologies and try innovative techniques that produce lesser pollutants.

Moreover, manufacturers must realize that they are also a part of the society with which they share this planet. Imposing environment levies would make them appreciate social responsibility, and they would be inspired to adopt eco-friendly approach.   Furthermore, the money collected from levies for polluting environment could be used to clean up environment, and also find environment friendly alternatives.

However, there are certain apprehensions in the implementation of such a step. It is commonly believed that manufacturers even after being taxed would not be convinced to make necessary changes in their methods of production and their practices since they would be more interested in transferring the levies to the customers in form of slightly inflated prices of the goods.

To sum up, I personally feel that imposing taxes would inspire manufacturers to adopt environment friendly technologies, and consequently bring down pollution. Therefore, this policy should be enacted for the larger good: for public and the environment.
