  • There have been cases, although rare, infrequent, sporadic which have cast a doubt on the sanctity of this profession. Some people are stimulated by commercial compulsions: viewership and readership ratings
  • Political correctness has also had a corrupting influence on them. They are driven by the majority opinion. They avoid derision and indignation of the masses and their fraternity

  • They risk not on their but also the lives of their family members
  • They are non-judgemental and present news as it is.

  • Unbiased, impartial
  • Non-judgemental

Although many question the credibility of contemporary journalists, this notion is misplaced. I feel  that excluding exceptions, most professionals in this domain strictly adhere to the fundamental tenets of their occupation, and exercise fairness.

The  apprehension casting doubts on the integrity of correspondents is their craving for gaining visibility together with prosperity quickly. This persuades them to compromise with their principles and resort to either leaning towards political correctness, or distorting the information to create sensation and gain popularity. For instance, some reporters, especially the ones covering ‘the Gulf War’ were blamed for being highly biased, and presenting lopsided details despite knowing that the majority of their audience is  already well-informed about the causes and circumstances of the conflict.

Nevertheless, although the concerns highlighted are not unfounded, such reporters are anomalies; an overwhelming majority remain devoted to their professions, and practice transparency. They always quote all possible angles of an event, and present the news as it is without being judgemental. To exemplify, the award-winning press woman, Ms. Kassa was praised highly for investigative journalism in the famine plagued Ethiopia.

To be considered reliable, news professionals must be incorruptible, fearless, and defiant of  the compulsions - greed for money, and influence of the powerful - that coax them to go astray, and instead comply with the ethics of their trade. To corroborate, it  is easy to find dedicated media men, and women, worldover hopping jobs frequently simply because they refuse to yield to the owners of media houses, or the temptations to amass wealth.

To reiterate, notwithstanding the unscrupulous minority, a majority engaged in journalism remain committed to their work by upholding unbiased character, and demonstrating ethical behaviour. They remain insulated from all kinds of personal and professional influences, and never deviate from their path.

In the modern era, news plays a major role in spreading information, but some believe that trusting journalists is not possible, while others dissent. This essay will discuss both views and highlight essential qualities that news reporters are expected to demonstrate.

There are valid reasons for people doubting  reporters. In some cases, media houses prioritize viewership and profit over accuracy, leading to distorted reporting. Additionally, some news professionals may be driven by political, or corporate interests, resulting in biased reporting. The rise of misinformation, especially in the digital era, has  further damaged the credibility of journalism, making it difficult for the general public to distinguish between factual and misleading news.

However, these allegations are not true in a majority of cases, for several newsmen and women have been complying with the tenets of ethical reporting, wherein they tend to delve deeper into any event and investigate exhaustively before presenting news to the general populace, and never compromise with their principles. This can be clearly evidenced by constant job switching by reputed correspondents who are shown the door by the media owners for not surrendering to their whims.

An ideal journalist should be akin to being closely connected to the fundamentals of this strategically sensitive profession to uphold credibility: accountability for their work and willingness to correct their mistakes. For instance, while reporting during Covid, pandemic  2020, many renowned newspersons from the New York Times, admitting citing unsolicited numbers of deaths due to infection, issued not only apologies but also republished the whole report.

In my opinion, although there are legitimate concerns about the trustworthiness of newspersons, most remain committed to the principles such as accuracy, honesty, accountability and integrity, except a few non-adhering professionals falling prey to temptation of fame and fortune.

The people who raise doubts on the impartiality and correctness of the news and reports being aired in, presented and written by the reporters is often marred by individual preferences and inclinations of individuals reporting in, which often push the reporting individuals to present news with a deviated and mutilated perspective. On other hand, some sections do feel that such kind of personal preferences of scribes seldom interfere with their profession and moreover when they present the real aspects of a reported incident, people listening or reading those reports are independent to judge the validity of the news being presented by the scribes.

Moving to qualities of an honest reporter, this occupation central to the idea of modern society, and thus, those practicing in this field must always practice with absolute impartiality and honesty, and must never let their personal objectives come in way of their professional responsibilities: reporting and presenting an impartial view point is their professional responsibility.

In hindsight, despite many expressing their remorse over the manipulation reporters have been recently indulging in, this profession has not yet not lost its sanctity, and many are pursuing it with similar fervor that has perpetuated ever since this occupation came into existence.
