Light pollution is one of the common problems, which is a cause of concern, especially for those living in modern cities. This menace can be ascribed to various sources, and it is imperative to take prudent steps to counter it.

The most common attributed to this problem are defective street light designs, allowing light to escape side and upwards instead of focussing only on the targeted area. Besides this, the lighting systems used in factories, restaurants, hotels and residential societies also add to this rapidly growing problem. Another major culprit for this kind of pollution is the generous use of billboards and advertising hoardings, often deployed across the urban areas, to promote products and services. These light up the night sky and make it obscure to the eyes. Similarly, it is undeniable that the irresponsible attitude of motorists who rely on using high beams add to the woes, sending their beams of headlights skywards.

An expert study conducted by Light Pollution Institute, San Francisco concluded that later half of 20th century and 21st century are marred by brightly lit urban skylines, where one can see bright horizons that are illuminated by bad street light designs and abundant  imprudent use of lighting systems by business establishments.

However, this challenge can be overcome by following a few simple steps such as improving the designs of street light systems; people complaining about the places where the excessive illumination is detected; fixing hours for the lights used in fair grounds, restaurants and even on boards being used to promote companies and their products; and motorists using low beams.

Overall, light pollution is a potential threat to the environment, and happens due to several human driven reasons even though it can be resolved just by applying rational strategies and initiatives.

In the contemporary era, a new form of pollution has emerged in urbanised locations owing to the utilisation of lights intensively. This essay shall discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and render some proposals for the state to surmount this growing issue.

This sort of pollution can be attributed to several factors. The incessantly rising crimes, especially in the metropolitan areas has turned the authorities quite apprehensive by virtue of which they install a plethora of lights to keep streets, alleys and even main roads well illuminated to mitigate the incidents of burglary, mugging and several other horrific crimes which usually takes place during the night. Moreover, the spiralling need to stay in limelight forces companies to slog hard round the clock in order to attain visibility among their targeted audience which  leads them install large well illuminated billboards and their signboards that emanate bright luminescence, and over and above using of intensive lighting to keep the factories well lit to enable the workforce to work and produce day and night to meet/satiate the growing demand.

Besides this, urbanites are influenced prominently by night life; therefore, they indulge themselves extensively in celebrations, during the night, such as marriages, parties, get-togethers, and so on owing to which they decorate their surroundings with a variety of lights, thereby emitting pollution in great amounts.

However, the panacea for this predicament can only be found by the joint efforts of the policy makers as well as the enterprises. Government should enact laws and escalate police patrolling at night to render secure surroundings to the urbanites exempted from all sorts of offences so that the support of lights can be abandoned and fears overcome. Furthermore, businesses should employ efficient machinery and manpower as well, to accomplish the work during the day time to avoid the hazardous emissions in the form of light. They should also volunteer to limit the number of hours they light up gigantic hoardings and signboards.

To reiterate, I feel even though light pollution, especially in the urban locales  is surely a growing and a worrying problem, it can be mitigated easily, provided that the state as well as companies don the mantle to curb this ecological disaster by deploying appropriate initiatives, and extend a safe environment to the society.

Ielts Essay - Light Pollution

The primary cause of this, not so new,  phenomenon is the light escaping from the conspicuous street lighting systems installed almost everywhere on main roads, streets, alleys, and several other locations frequented by public. These do not only illuminate the areas they are meant for but also the adjoining ones. On the top of that, due to their defective designing or focusing, a lot of light tends to escape towards the skies too.

In addition to the above, besides street lights, the big self illuminated bright billboards used by the authorities and businesses to highlight their establishments and products are also to blame for this pollution. These brightly shine throughout the night, lighting up the  skylines of cities; thus blurring the skies. Additionally, with security being a major concern today, every nook and corner of complexes – that may include parking, office complexes, etc. – are given a more than required illumination, which leaves the areas flooded with light.

However, this, despite being a difficult to resolve  issue, remedies are available. It is necessary to redesign the street light equipment, which focus only on the intended areas instead of dispersing in unwanted direction, especially towards the skies. Furthermore, businesses also must fulfill their social obligations by limiting the use of huge illuminated advertising boards and hoardings.

To conclude, illuminating  public areas is primary factor that is contributing to the light pollution. Better designs, and imposing voluntary restrictions on  the hours of use of advertising and decorative could surely help.
