The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing. Do you agree or disagree?

The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing. Do you agree or disagree?

Of late,  there has been a debate raging on the matter that whether the present fashion of online buying will supersede shops, which might close due to masses opting for ecommerce portals. the rationale  behind both views is discussed  below

The fast proliferating trend is inclined towards the fact that  shopping in person  will be history and the new normal will be buying online since they are one stop shops and afford  the availability of  almost everything, and the way things are evolving, it seems that people will be more profoundly engaged in their work, leaving them with little time for undertaking shopping trips. Thus, they will favor unrestricted access, browsing as per convenience that does not have timeline  boundaries, evading the  challenges like traffic  and pollution, and saving on the  cost of travelling. Furthermore, with the rising number of eportals that will afford privileges like comparison with millions of  available  products  without human intervention will be too tempting to overlook, pushing shoppers to abandon their trips to markets.

However, there is sizable lobby that holds reservations  against this notion, they perceive that even in face of stiff competition the shops will endure and never succumb to this onslaught of websites offering a plethora of merchandise, as there will be still many goods that can purchased after having a good look and feel of it such as precious jewellery, or other expensive material, and irrespective of lucrative offers, many will still resort to  visiting shops.

Besides this, going to shopping centers will continue to gratify several since for them such an endeavor will be an exciting opportunity to escape mundane. Another imminent factor adding to its benefits are that shops provide personal touch to services and credit which is impossible in case of online purchasing, thereby taking an important space in society, and ensuring their survival.

Overall, even though it is irrefutable that there are numerous  benefits of internet-based shopping which cannot be ignored, I do not subscribe that the benefits of the shops will let them fade away: their charm shall endure and continue to entice many.

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some commentators propose that propensity to purchase is influenced by the age  of shoppers. However, one cannot overlook the role of other underlying determinants that define this tendency. This essay, thus, partially subscribes to this notion.

Those advocating that purchasing approach is  determined by how old one is believe that the young are easily enticed by advertisements and marketing, but their older counterparts are able to evade temptations engendered by these mediums. It has  often been observed that the youth are influenced into buying stuff  that may be unwanted,  when they observe their favorite celebrities endorsing some products, or clothes. On the other hand, those in older age-groups lean for purchasing things when there is a need such as during cultural events, or for daily requirements like medicine, grocery and household material.

Nevertheless, there are other attributes also defining this propensity. Wealth is the primary factor that pushes one to make purchasing decisions. To corroborate, the elite, regardless of their age, are usually observed buying for leisure and to keep up with the current vogue, while those in middle-income groups only invest into buying endeavors to fulfill their fundamental essentials.

Similarly, the conduct of shoppers also plays a role in this proclivity; where the spendthrift will go and buy for satisfying their craving for shopping, but prudent spenders are quite prudent and spend only when the opportunity or necessity arises. Apart from that, gender also has an impact on this conduct; women tend to go shopping often, while males are rarely seen following this pattern.

Overall, undeniably, age does come into play when defining purchasing patterns, one cannot ignore the prevalence of other aspects: prosperity and spending approach, to name a few, that cumulatively affect the approach of buyers.

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Shopping has manifested itself more broadly, and many are scampering to discover the attributes that drive this propensity. Some feel that it is the age that has  a major influence, while others blame it on numerous factors. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I will analyze both the sides of coins and share my inclinations.

To start with, a school of thought harbors a conventional belief that age is the primary factor that influences every individual. To corroborate,  young groups crave fashionable clothes, new gadgets and keeping themselves updated. It has been seen that a majority of people are constantly changing their smartphone to stay in sync with the vogue, while those in middle and old age tend to focus on basic needs of their families, in which most of them are found prioritizing their monthly budgets rather than spending their earnings on something that does not serve their direct purpose.

However, the other lobby has different perspectives and believes that wealth is the motivational force behind shopping approaches, for it has  turned this undertaking into a leisure for the elite, and a way of fulfilling their requirements for others. A survey carried out by the Hindustan Times found under eighteen students who had a penchant to collect the smartphones of Samsung brand had almost more than fifty devices. On the other hand, those from average income groups had only enough budget to afford not more than one mobile phone. Moreover, availability of resources in the market also influences the public to buy new products, especially when their famous celebrities endorse something in adverts.

In hindsight, despite the fact that age has some influence on buying attitudes, I align myself with the notion that multiple factors such as wealth, advertisements and surroundings are the driving factors.

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Whether the age of shoppers plays a crucial role in defining purchasing propensity, or are there other attributes influencing this pattern, is a matter of profound debate. This essay partially agrees that all factors have a significant role in the behavior of shoppers, and shall elucidate its inclination in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, those who lend their support in favor of this tendency being underpinned by age harbor a conventional belief that  how old one is, is the driving factor that cultivates differences in shopping attitudes. Youngsters and people in middle ages, or even in twilight ages have disparate approaches when it comes to buying, where the former usually get inclined towards fashion, and are overwhelmed by peer pressure, the latter are driven by a motive to satisfying basic needs of families and keeping this endeavor within their budgets.

On the contrary, some propound that other factors also play a significant role in defining purchasing attitudes. This view finds its roots in umpteen causes; wealth and circumstances, with prosperity being the prominent factor of demarcation between the needs and wants. The affluent are passion driven and are able to adapt to lifestyles in vogue, whereas the impoverished always shop for fundamental essentials like bread and butter. Similarly, some are selective and wait for the appropriate opportunity, consider others things when going shopping. To corroborate, people wait to move into their own home and then buy furniture and fixtures rather than buying these for a  rented house.

Overall, undoubtedly, young ones and elderly have divergence in disbursing money for shopping purposes, but other elements do influence purchasing proclivity such as income and timings, it can be asserted that all generations do consider these factors while going shopping.

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Shopping habits depend more on your age group than anything else. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Why age defines the approach towards shopping?

  • A conventional belief that age is the driving factor that makes people embrace distinct shopping attitudes: young people go for fashionable clothes, new gadgets, while the people in middle-aged and  old-aged group and tend to focus on the needs of their families and budgets

  • The shopping forays of youngsters are  fueled by peers, public icons and are frequent, whereas that of older people is need-driven and occasional

What other factors are more relevant

  • The wealth: there is a clear demarcation between the affluent - passion driven or a hobby, the middle income  and low-income groups a means to fulfill the requirements,  and the  impoverished - an endeavor to fulfill basic needs.

  • Availability of resources and circumstances is also influencing buying practices

  • The attitude of being a spendthrift, or prudent spender it is rather an innate skill

  • In contemporary times, people are adopting buying patterns that are in vogue

  • With the technology developing and companies releasing upgrades regularly, people are embracing consumerist attitudes - use and throw, regardless of their age and economic background.

  • Conventional and dynamic attitudes

  • Gender dependent - women shop more than their male counterparts

The debate around factors that define shopping patterns is the most heated. While some think that the age of shoppers is the influencing factor, others think differently.

A large lobby of people believes that shopping has become a critical part of the society which totally depends on the age of shoppers, while some suggest that there are other factors underlying this propensity.

To begin with, a school of thought propounds that age plays a crucial role in the shopping approach of individuals. For instance, young people are more inclined to purchase brand new products to keep up-to-date in the fashionable era and flaunt their possessions among their peers, while the people in their middle age and golden years try to buy something that aids them in fulfilling their basic necessities. Also, the shopping list of youngsters are more influenced by well-known celebrities, seniors and neighbors, which include modern clothes and latest gadgets. However, this is not the case with the older shoppers as they shop for medicines, food items and home equipment.

Having said that, some commentators believe that wealth plays a pivotal role in ascertaining shopping tendencies. The affluent buy what they like, but those with average incomes always go for the things that are high on priority; similarly, the underprivileged section shops to fulfill their basic needs. Moreover, buying attitudes are also sometimes influenced by genders as women shop more as compared to the men. Additionally, advertisements, especially ones featuring celebrities, are also an essential attribute that many times propels audiences into a buying spree. Adding to this, businesses keep releasing new versions of equipment such as mobiles, creating an inclination to use and throw and one repeatedly shops them, despite not having enough money to buy.

Overall, I fail to concur with this notion partially that shopping depends on the age alone, but also directly, or indirectly pivots on the amount of money, time and need to buy something.

The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing

Purchasing goods from websites is a new fad among people nowadays and the way it is penetrating every customer segment, the day is not far when shopping centres will be forced to close. However, this notion is countered by a sizable lobby that suggests such an event is not even a remote possibility due to the avid shoppers who will never shun this practice.

Many speculate, the way purchasing from websites is gaining more and more traction, it seems that shopping centres will be a history soon, but the supporters of physical stores dissent on this issue, and suggest going shopping will endure regardless of the popularity of online alternatives.

Those who harbour the belief that e-portals will push shopping centres out of business profess that people are expected to become busier in future owing to their overwhelming professional and family engagements,  leaving them with little time to undertake a shopping trip. And, since they will have a variety of e-shopping sites at their disposal, offering them a surfeit of merchandise that can be delivered right at their doorstep, they will be tempted to shop online. Such a tendency will be ubiquitous, thereby reducing the number of visitors to markets.

Nevertheless, a school of thought does not support the former notion and asserts that assumptions will be assumptions, and no one can discount the dedicated/passionate shoppers for whom a trip to shopping districts and malls will continue to be a leisure trip, a chance to break the mundane, and spend some time rejoicing with their family members.

Besides this, the tribe of fussy buyers who cannot buy before doing some window shopping and browsing through numerous alternatives by checking them physically, before finalising their choice will never disappear from the face of this planet. Such customers will help ensure the survival of physical shops and stores despite the rising popularity of internet driven buying.

Overall,  I strongly feel despite the strongest of the guesses that support the view of shops closing their businesses, the practice of undertaking shopping visits will continue unabated, and millions will continue enjoying it. Therefore, I do not concur with this statement.

The growth of online shopping will one day lead to all shops in towns and cities closing. Do you agree or disagree?

The pace with which the people are inclining towards online shopping has sparked a profound debate, some saying that it will lead to closing of shops in towns and cities in future while others disagreeing with it. Both have apt justifications for their opinions.

The lobby favoring the view says that the way hectic schedules and long working hours are overwhelming people, it seems  in a few years from now this will hardly leave with them any time to explore streets and shops, which will prove to be a prominent factor to make people move more towards digital exploring. Moreover, making available merchandise of different regions of the world at the doorstep of buyers is forte of these portals, which is likely to appeal more and more, turning them into avid online shoppers

However,  there is little doubt that physically visiting outlets will remain a leisure for many and act as a de-stressing activity, which will always keep the charm of visiting retail outlets alive. Moreover, offline shopping is the only alternative available when one needs things in an emergency. For instance, in case of sudden headache, buying medications from a nearby shop will preferably be a better choice for timely relief. Also, many hard to convince shoppers, present in millions across the world, who buy only after thoroughly checking will remain the primary  clients of stores and showrooms. Additionally, many shopping portals do not offer cash on delivery as a mode of payment, the absence of which will make people stick to conventional methods of buying.

Overall, despite the advantages online shopping bears, the benefits offline shopping renders, cannot be overlooked, resultantly, I do not agree that the former will out do the latter and lead to closing down of shops anytime in future.

Nowadays there is an increasing trend of big shopping centers opening up while small shops are closing down. What are the advantages or disadvantages of big shopping centers versus small local shops?

Nowadays there is an increasing trend of big shopping centers opening up while small shops are closing down. What are the advantages or disadvantages of big shopping centers versus small local shops?

Big shopping centers have been taking over the market and this is causing small retail outlets to shut their business. In my opinion, super markets are a profit for the customers and the owners as compared to small shops. In this essay, I shall highlight potential reasons for my stance.

Shopping centers have been an elevation of small shops; these are more convenient as they offer a wide variety of merchandise under one roof, like groceries, clothes, utensils and even electronics. The products sold guarantee standardized quality and warranty. This saves people from the humongous investment of time and effort they have to put running from pillar to post to get all the necessities, offering unprecedented convenience. Moreover, these places can easily accommodate a huge number of individuals without any problems. Besides this, visitors are also afforded safety and parking space for vehicles.

However, there are certain drawbacks one can hardly ignore. Despite offering comforts, large format stores  have also resulted in people overspending: most of these stores tend to lure shoppers with offers and discounts, catapulting the people into buying spree, making them overspend; eventually landing them in deep financial troubles, and, of course,  social wastage. Apart from that, gone are the days when one could buy small quantities without planning a big shopping trip by just walking to a neighborhood store and buying the required goods. Besides this, obtaining credit is no longer a luxury that small format stores offered effortlessly as buyers enjoyed a personal rapport with shopkeepers and always had  an option of  paying later, as per their convenience, at their disposal. This aspect has hit the middle and lower income groups badly.

Similarly, small local stores, although have been a long tradition, earlier when supermarkets did not exist, these were the only way of acquiring goods. Overtime, they were of little benefit to the buyers because of a limited range of items available and also brought close to no profit for the owners, resulting in shutting down the shops. Besides, having not so much space to fit in people also caused a lot of chaos and stress that eventually fled people away. These stores offered no discounts or deals to attract customers, while the quality of goods was not satisfactory as well.

On the whole, despite some failings, big stores have been successful in turning the shopping experience into an enriching rendezvous.  Now one can enjoy unparalleled comfort while shopping and at the  same time be guaranteed of the quality of products.
