The use of CCTV (close circuit television) cameras in streets, stations, shops and other public places has increased rapidly in recent years. Although we are told that these cameras help in the fight against crime, some people are opposed to their use, they believe that everyone has a right to privacy. (serve more as an invasion of our privacy than as a protection of our safety). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In the contemporary era, whereas the security camera has become analogous to safe and secure public spaces, many people argue that constant surveillance violates the fundamental right to personal privacy. This essay aims to explore the validity of criticism.
To start with, the critics profess that individuals step out of their homes to commute to work or perform routine activities, and ubiquitous presence of CCTV cameras everywhere often makes them feel uneasy, as if they are under constant observation. This perception can create anxiety, and a feeling of being stalked, even when no unlawful act is involved. Over time, such surveillance may erode personal freedom and discourage natural behavior in public. For example, there have been some cases, wherein CCTV footage was recorded without consent and later misused. In some instances, clips were leaked on social media, or accessed by unauthorized individuals, leading to embarrassment and harassment, highlighting privacy concerns.
Nevertheless, these allegations are dwarfed when it comes to ensuring a secure outdoor environment. These monitoring devices do not intrude into private spaces as they are installed only in public areas to improve safety. Their presence acts as a strong deterrent against crime by creating fear among offenders who know they are being monitored. This preventive effect helps mitigate illegal acts such as theft, vandalism, and assault. Additionally, CCTV footage provides crucial evidence for law enforcement agencies, enabling accurate identification of suspects and reconstruction of incidents.
In conclusion, I partially agree that these mediums enhance public safety while also posing privacy concerns. Although surveillance helps dissuade infringements, and assist authorities, its misuse can violate individual rights. Therefore, strict regulations and transparent monitoring systems are necessary to maintain a balance between security and privacy.
