Agree

  • State-of-the-art technologies like automation are extremely expensive and can be only afforded by the wealthy and large companies: they earn bigger profits
  • Technology is taking away jobs
  • *Lack of knowledge of technology is creating a gap in education and then jobs

Disagree

  • Technology has made it possible to make food and medical treatment affordable
  • Made education approachable
  • Made communication and entertainment accessible
  • Made it possible for even small entrepreneurs to approach their customers
  • Anyone can earn money by creating social media accounts.
  • Even small vendors can approach customers located at a distance
  • Work and business from home has also become possible
  • Those living away from their families can now remit money using

Although technological advancements are blamed for stimulating disparities among the wealthy and the impoverished, some dissent strongly. I too feel these have helped dilute socioeconomic differences in several ways.

The ones suggesting that new innovations are engendering social inequality due to economic imbalance, feel that these have allowed the prosperous to afford lavish lifestyles. They can consume cutting-edge technologies and facilities, like high-tech home appliances, automobiles, and quality education resources, among others, helping them not only lead comfortable lives currently, but also ensure a prosperous future. However, the destitute must settle for mediocre goods and facilities.

Nevertheless, the innovative interventions have instead ushered in an era of affordability and egalitarianism. Improvements in agriculture and healthcare have enabled everyone, regardless of their economic backgrounds, to provide themselves with food and healthcare support, thereby mitigating imbalances. For example, agricultural yields have witnessed a spike; and medical facilities enjoy a wider penetration and easy accessibility, owing to cheapening of medical education, medicines and equipment. Consequently, both are  available at lower costs to all strata of society, even the poverty-stricken

Moreover, the advent of state-of-the-art technologies, specifically the internet, has enabled equitable distribution of resources, in education and entertainment. Even the marginalized can gain opportunities to enroll in courses of their choice, and improve their chances of obtaining better-compensated jobs. Similarly, everyone can view movies, concerts and sports on television and online apps, without needing to invest heavily into visiting cinemas, concerts and stadiums, thereby democratizing leisure, something that was a haunt of the affluent formerly.

Overall, barring a few areas like luxurious lifestyles, technological interventions have proven to be extremely beneficial for all economic segments, by helping bridge the economic gaps through proportionate allocation of resources, particularly education, entertainment, nourishment and health support.
