Euthanasia, or mercy killing, has been a controversial issue for many years. Although many people are strongly against such a practice, there is a growing demand to have it legalised. How far do you agree with euthanasia being made legal?
In recent times, euthanasia has become a highly debatable topic. While some individuals strongly support turning it into a permissible practice, others oppose it. I strongly agree with it being legalised, but under strict regulations.
The major reason for supporting this notion is the prolonged suffering experienced by individuals in a vegetative state for many years. Although care should be taken to dissuade abuse of this facility, it can prove to be extremely helpful in cases where chances of recovery of the individuals with severe medical conditions are remote, or even non-existent. Patients with incurable illnesses often endure extreme physical and emotional pain, which is not only unbearable for them but also deeply distressing for their families. Under strict laws and regulations, allowing this procedure could help the ailing to end their sufferings with dignity and peace.
Similarly, another important argument is the compassionate aspect. Modern medical treatments can sometimes extend life, but not necessarily improve its quality, making it a temporary life-sustaining option and not a permanent one. The sick may remain alive but precipitate colossal financial outlay, in terms of colossal medical bills. However, this process can help reduce emotional and financial burdens on families struggling to care for critically-ill relatives. To corroborate, the Supreme Court of India recently allowed passive euthanasia for an adult who had been in a vegetative state for a period of 13 years, and the probability of his recovering and recuperating were bleak.
In conclusion, even though euthanasia is a sensitive issue, I believe it should be permitted by law under strict regulation, so as to discourage its misapplication, and only those who have been subjected to extreme torment due to their health, or have been surviving only life-support, should be allowed to undergo this procedure.
