Nowadays,  various historical edifices are safeguarded by law: they are considered a critical legacy. However, some believe that these should be replaced by modern constructions, for they present impediments in the way of progress. This essay will critically examine the significance of preserving historical monuments and deliver a well-reasoned conclusion.

It is considered very important to preserve heritage sites as they carry a great nostalgic value, and help to create a link between the past and present. Likewise, these provide a medium to make the younger generation aware of the achievements of their ancestors, which will help to increase their knowledge of history and feel motivated to perpetuate their values.

Similarly, these sites assist the countries to attract tourists, helping boost the tourism industry. For instance, the government of Malta has maintained their old forts and churches, and promoted them as tourist locations. resulting in a 70 percent increase in the  total tourism revenues, and also creating employment in this industry.

However, history plays a vital role in the development and economy of a country; nevertheless, old buildings need huge investments for maintenance and refurbishment, something that poses a huge burden on taxpayers. Likewise, sometimes, it becomes nearly impossible to find similar materials used while constructing the monuments.

Moreover, many of these edifices are unsafe and despite regular maintenance, remain vulnerable to collapse, which can lead to accidents. For instance, in Indonesia, parts of old town halls have deteriorated over time due to weathering and lack of proper conservation, posing risks to both visitors and the monuments themselves.

To conclude, protecting historical sites is extremely essential; they preserve cultural heritage, educate future generations, and contribute significantly to tourism, but maintaining every building can be expensive and challenging thus only the most relevant should be preserved.
