In many countries, coffee chains are expanding rapidly, which some claim threatens the survival of small local cafés. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is a noticeable trend in expansion of coffee chains in various countries around the globe, while some lobbyists believe that this growth is jeopardizing the survival of local cafes. This essay will critically analyze this perspective and deliver a well-reasoned conclusion.
Many well-established coffee chains are increasing rapidly due to their effective pricing strategies. They maintain standardized prices across all their outlets. Likewise, they offer frequent discounts and special deals, particularly through specific bank cards. For instance, popular coffee chains like Starbucks provide discounts and special offers on payments made through certain bankcards, luring more customers and helping their business grow quickly. Consequently, they are snatching business from local brands.
Moreover, these chains offer higher customer satisfaction as compared to local ones, through additional services: free wifi, complementary cookies on birthdays, and so on. Additionally, they provide a better ambience, which leads to greater customer retention. For example, many students in Vancouver prefer studying in Tim Hortons due to its comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi access, and relaxing environment. Consequently, this encourages longer visits and repeat customers, supporting expansion of such chains and closure of small businesses.
However, cafes having regional presence cannot disappear as they have their own unique characteristics like authentic local tastes and personalized experience, which large chains often fail to replicate. Additionally, small cafes can survive because they have lower operational costs and can easily change their menu and prices. This flexibility helps them to compete with big rivals.
To conclude, although the rapid expansion of coffee chains offer several merits such as standardized pricing and enhanced customer experience, it does not necessarily pose a serious threat to local cafes, because the latter continue to attract customers through their unique authentic tastes and flexibility
