Some people are of the opinion that subjects like mathematics and philosophy can be taxing on young minds and that they should not be made compulsory in the study curriculum. I strongly disagree with this view; these subjects are pivotal to fostering critical and analytical abilities, and thus cannot be overlooked.

Mathematics can initially seem technical, and thus, challenging,  as learners tend to fear numbers, but this subject is not just about numbers, it fosters problem solving abilities, and analytical and critical thinking. These valuable life skills help turn individuals into well-informed decision makers as adults. To corroborate, as per studies conducted by MIT psychologists, most grown-ups admit that despite harboring fear for maths during their early years,  they went to study it after gaining the right guidance from tutors until middle school. They  acknowledge that this helped them garner adroitness in making sound financial decisions and bolster problem-solving abilities.

Similarly, although philosophy could initially seem to be quite boring for young learners, it can  help inquisitive young minds to explore beyond their everyday experiences and expand their horizons, helping them learn about analysing  any situation or event from a multitude of perspectives. Consequently, they can grasp the ability to differentiate right from wrong before taking sides on a particular subject matter. Moreover, they also gain an opportunity to become resourceful and cultivate finesse on thinking out of the box and find innovative solutions to complications facing them in personal, professional and social realms.

In conclusion, while mathematics and philosophy can be challenging for learners, shelving them will do more harm than good; this will deprive the young generation of learning about rational and prudent thinking processes. Instead schools should find ways to make these subjects interesting so that important life skills are not compromised.

Subjects  like mathematics and philosophy are considered as critical for gaining entry into the professional courses. However, some believe that learners should enjoy the liberty opting to not explore these, while others voice dissent against this proposal. This matter needs to be critically analysed.

Many  commentators profess that pursuing these topics help develop logical thinking and quantitative reasoning among young minds, and make them intellectually strong in the long run for later endeavors, and thus, these should remain compulsory. For example, in India, maths plays a crucial role in every  competitive exam, and  those excelling in this domain, earn better opportunities.

Similarly, philosophy aids in fostering dexterity in traits quality required  to make decisions logically  and creatively, helping surmount even steepest of the challenges. That is the reason those in commanding positions in armed forces are made vulnerable to philosophy since this can equip them with qualities required to assess, analyze circumstances and discover remedies, plan strategies using their resourcefulness.

Nevertheless, some question the former view and argue that those having little inclination for these disciplines, should be spared,  for they might suffer from anxiety, and stress, as they have to carry extra burden to study them. Moreover, such compulsion creates delay in attaining success, and are more prone to exposing learners to ailments such as depression, obesity, diabetes, and so forth. A  survey conducted in the UK states that school goers find calculations difficult, precipitating panic attacks and poor performance during examinations.

To conclude, although teaching math and philosophy is essential to develop mental abilities, those failing in learning these can be given a little leverage by making them an optional component of the curriculum so that academic progress is not hindered and learning becomes enjoyable.

Making Mathematics and philosophy elective rather than compulsory part of syllabus is a suggestion that has invited a fierce debate because while some support it, others reject it. I feel learners should enjoy the leverage to study or abandon these subjects since these could impact their academic outcomes favorably.

This suggestion is founded on the belief that exploring these two topics is mentally taxing for many pupils as they are unable to comprehend complicated theories and formulas and are found spending invariably long hours attempting to familiarize themselves with the subject matter unsuccessfully. This can be quite despiriting and unfavourably impact their academic pursuits, in the form of poor outcomes; they get less time to focus on other areas. In extreme cases, many also tend to drop schooling altogether. Similarly, affording them this liberty will let them invest their energy into the subjects that appeal to them and excel in those realms. Such a system will not only translate into outstanding performance in studies but also allow learners to consolidate their knowledge for their desired professional domains. To corroborate, western countries have implemented this policy and reaped rich benefits, in the form of trade-specific specialists being produced quickly. However, those skeptical about this arrangement fear that this might impact overall development of youngsters adversely: maths helps foster logic, while philosophy provides the ability to think deeply, and avoiding these areas could deprive students of these critical abilities. Nevertheless, these disciplines can be retained as a part of study plan till middle school and later abandoned: advanced knowledge of these subjects is not necessary.
In hindsight, exploring maths and philosophy at school should be mandatory up to a certain level and later learners should be allowed to exercise their discretion, to study these, or not to.

Ielts Essay - Math and Phlosophy
Mathematics and Philosophy are considered to be the core of academic learning; and with the growing relevance of education, more and more people have started laying emphasis on these disciplines though some strongly feel that pupils, who find it hard to cope with these subjects, should be spared, and that these subjects should excluded from formal syllabus.

Mathematics is regarded as a very difficult subject that consumes a lot of time of those pupils, who are not aptly equipped with skills to handle the problems and queries posed to them. This often leads them to waste some really valuable time that could be used more productively in some other domains in which learners have interest and an inclination to learn.  Besides this, , philosophy is purely, knowledge for sake of knowledge,  a subject for deep thinkers and those who seek development of intellect; and not every student has an inclination towards such deep study as they seek to pursue such subjects that offer practical rather than theoretical knowhow.

On the contrary, ignoring and excluding subjects such as math and philosophy would prove to be counterproductive for the young learners. Math goes a long way in developing the analytical and problems solving skills among the kids that could prove to be really valuable for their personal and professional lives later in life as adults.

Similarly, philosophy is a subject of great importance for the students as it helps them pick up skills about appreciating the world and its peculiar features – for which one needs appropriate knowhow and an in depth thinking. This discipline helps in fostering rational thinking and assisting in mental development.

To sum up, I feel that exclusion of academic subjects like math and philosophy would not be productive, henceforth they should be retained.
