In contemporary society, it is increasingly evident that a significant number of offenders re-engage in criminal activities after completing their initial sentence. This essay will examine the underlying causes of this growing trend, and suggest effective strategies to reduce reoffending.

To embark upon the key factor behind this phenomenon, offenders often commit more crime due to lack of rehabilitation in prisons. Many prisons focus only on punishment rather than improving their behaviour. As a result, they do not learn any additional skills, and when they return to society with the same mindset with which they entered.

Moreover, the stigma of having a criminal record reduces the chance of getting a job in this swiftly changing world. When an individual is unable to earn an honest living, they may choose to return to illegal activities for survival. Another reason is that prisons often expose first time offenders to hardened criminals, which can increase their likelihood of committing more serious crime after release.

Reformists believe that several measures could be embraced to mitigate recidivism. The government should introduce proper rehabilitation programs, including education, vocational training, and psychological counselling. These regimes could help offenders reintegrate into society by giving them practical skills, and emotional support. Apart from that, lawmakers must create employment opportunities specifically for former prisoners, such as partnerships with companies willing to hire them. Finally, improving the overall prison environment by separating non-violent offenders from dangerous criminals, could help prevent negative influences that contribute to reoffendering.

In the nutshell, repeated crimes occur mainly due to poor maintenance in prison, and limited opportunities after release. By offering skill-based training, mental support, and fair employment options, societies can significantly reduce the number of offenders who return to criminal activity.
