Some people believe that anybody can be a teacher, if he is trained properly. Others think that there are some personal qualities a good teacher should have. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?

There is an ongoing debate regarding whether effective teaching depends primarily on inherent personal qualities, or whether anyone can negotiate this task with efficacy by gaining relevant training. This essay intends to examine both the perspectives before presenting a plausible conclusion.

To begin with, many argue that tutors act as second parents for young learners, as the latter spend a substantial portion of their day in educational institutions. Therefore, qualities such as patience, empathy, and emotional intelligence are considered critical. These attributes enable these professionals to comprehend individual learning needs, alter  teaching strategies to address distinct needs, and maintain an encouraging classroom atmosphere. To support this view, a recent survey conducted by the Department of Education at Amity University reported that nearly 60 percent of students chose personal qualities over certifications when it came to donning the role of tutors, as an engaging and understanding professional helps them remain focused and motivated during lessons.

Nevertheless, another school of thought vehemently rejects the aforementioned statement and professes that teaching is a structured profession, especially in modern times, that can be effectively garnered through formal training. Contemporary teacher-training programs emphasize classroom management, lesson planning, assessment strategies, and child psychology. These skills enable individuals, irrespective of their background, to deliver curriculum content meticulously. For example, a person with strong subject knowledge but limited teaching traits can still become effective through guided instruction coaching.

In the end, there has been a tug of war among two sections, those  emphasizing personal attributes, and those prioritising professional training. While proper training equips teachers with essential technical competencies, personal qualities significantly enhance teaching effectiveness. I, therefore, believe that both components are essential and that neither alone is sufficient to mold an accomplished educator.
