Nowadays many young people deliberately damage public places. What are the causes and solutions?
In recent years, many young people have been involved in vandalism of public properties, often due to lack of civic awareness and peer pressure. This essay will examine the main causes of this issue and will propose possible solutions to control.
One of the main reasons persuading youngsters to deface communal assets is the lack of civic awareness, as they usually fail to recognise the value of public infrastructure and end up destroying it. Likewise, peer pressure also plays a significant role, as many often engage in such behaviour to gain attention and acceptance among their social circles. In addition, inadequate parental supervision is another reason, as few are appropriately guided toward socially responsible behaviour.
Similarly, another key factor is weak laws; lenient provisions for punishment for such acts, fail to deter individuals from engaging in harming public assets. For instance, in London, if a young individual is caught damaging public infrastructure, he or she may only receive a warning and be let off. Moreover, absence of counseling for anger management is also leading the young generation to vent their frustration through engaging in this kind of activity.
To mitigate this issue, several measures can be implemented. Stricter laws and penalties should be enforced to dissuade such behavior. For instance, in Lithuania, those caught engaging in such endeavors are restricted from availing scholarships and are required to perform community service for at at least one month. In addition, educational institutes should engender enlightenment about civic responsibilities among juveniles to raise awareness about the significance of public property.
In hindsight, taking everything into account, while vandalism is a complex issue driven by a range of underlying factors, it can be effectively reduced through enforcement of stricter regulations and promotion of greater awareness.
