In many cities today, most people live in large apartment blocks. Does this kind of accommodation have more advantages or disadvantages?

The contemporary urban landscape has radically evolved to predominantly towering apartment blocks that house a significant portion of the population. This shift towards vertical living has prompted discussions about the merits and drawbacks of this arrangement that shall be compared in the following paragraphs.

With city spaces becoming extremely limited and urban populations swelling,  residing in large apartment complexes has  become a vogue due to several causes. This discussion delves into the multifaceted nature of this living arrangement, exploring the myriad benefits it offers, and the potential drawbacks that one might encounter.

Such residential settings permit efficient use of urban space, accommodating a colossal number of people within a smaller area,  bringing down the cost and rents of housing units, making surviving in cities affordable. Also, since the maintenance is taken care of by the management and is shared, one is not needed to pay out of their nose, causing the cost of leaving to plummet.

Moreover, amenities such as gyms, swimming pools, common areas, and even rooftop gardens, which may be expensive or impractical to have in single-family homes are easily accessible. Similarly, owing to their location within the close vicinity of urban centers, these locations afford easy access to workplaces, entertainment, shopping, and public transportation. Above all, one cannot deny that enhanced security measures like controlled access, surveillance cameras, and doormen, extend an unmatched sense of safety, especially for children, engendering a carefree environment.

Nevertheless, it will be too naive to overlook the downsides of such an arrangement. It is hard for large families to accommodate comfortably; and shared walls with others robs one of privacy, exposing them to noise from the neighborhood. Additionally, restrictions on the renovation and personalizing decor for the facade is out of bounds, turning the outlook of homes monotonous.

Overall, even though it is always a personal preference of each individual to choose the space for their living according to their budget and aspirations, apartments fetch unrivaled upsides that eclipse the pitfalls. This system holds promises that will bolster urban sprawl.
