Safety standards are important when building peoples’ homes. Who should be responsible for enforcing strict building codes – the government or the people who build the homes?

Nowadays, a school of thought suggests that governments should take the ownership to ensure application of appropriate safety norms when building residential, while others do not support the former view and say this should be done by those who build houses.

To start with, many believe that governments should take the responsibility for ensuring compliance with safety standards while constructing units because they have resources and power to do so. Lawmakers have resources such as expertise to define conventions that can provide definitions of safeguards for dwelling units. Apart from this, as they have the authority to implement such rules and making it sure that everyone follows them without given a second thought, all tend to fall in line and adopt compulsory norms to avoid the consequences such as penalties and punishments.

Moreover, a lobby comments that it is the responsibility of policy makers to afford the safety to taxpayers by adopting necessary steps. They say that at the time of natural calamities the public faces umpteen difficulties and lives under the risk of losing valuable things and even lives, which can force lawmakers to compensate for losses.

However, on the other side of the coin, some say that structure and safety codes should be controlled by those who engage in construction endeavors since they are the ones who are available on the location at the time of construction. They  are well aware of material being used and will be directly impacted if some mishaps occur due to substandard construction quality.

Overall, I believe that governments should don the mantle when it comes to making sure that residential building by-laws are strictly adhered to since they can negotiate this task more effectively.
