Some people say that no one should work after the age of 65, others say that anyone should be able to continue working as long as they wish. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
There is a fierce debate going on in society about the retirement age of working professionals. Some agree with the notion that one should be relieved of their professional obligations once they turn 65, while others dissent by saying that it should be an individual prerogative. I will discuss both the aspects in the upcoming paragraphs and share my viewpoint on it.
To start with, proponents of this setting assert that this will help in replacing an aging workforce with fresh talent, helping the young generation to get into the market and explore opportunities, resulting in decreasing unemployment. Apart from that, after ceasing to work, one can get more time to focus on their overall well-being and practice new hobbies and skills in terms of spending leisure time with family and friends. For example, Britain implemented a retirement age in 2022 and witnessed a sharp decline in the new OPD registration among senior citizens and marked 2024 as a “Health reform year” by introducing hobby classes for retirees to promote active and healthy aging.
Nevertheless, opponents of this view suggest that one should not be forced to leave work, and that the choice should be always theirs. If they are physically, mentally fit and continue to work, they should be extended liberty to continue: they can bring years of experience and expertise in the field, helping new recruits to learn more quickly. Furthermore, it has been observed by many that abruptly ending a career leads to stressful and depressed life if they do not have any friends and family around.
To capitulate, although mandatory retirement age has its own benefits, providing flexibility or opting for a more liberal approach will always be beneficial and equitable, and let one decide as per their typical circumstances.
