As per the modern school of thought, the contemporary pastime endeavours highlight the prevalent vogue rather than the individualistic approach towards using their free time, but this notion can be challenged on several grounds.

Those supporting this perception cite the rising instances of currently popularised free time haunts gaining subscribers by virtue of these being aggressively endorsed by celebrated personalities, and it is a human propensity to ape noted public figures, in order to gain similar acknowledgement from peers. To corroborate, several  participants in white water rafting in Colorado river, admit performing this activity  due to being inspired by film stars like Tom Cruise who featured in a documentary that covered this adventure sport.

Moreover, many embrace concurrent trends, in place of engaging with something that appeals to them; they do not want to be labelled old-fashioned, and intend to stay in sync with the present aspirations of their social groups or communities. The rising fame of international sports like cricket, and fading popularity of hockey in India, is a clear illustration of this tendency.

Nevertheless, despite this phenomenon gaining traction among some sectors of the populace, its reach is limited to the wealthy, the fashionable and youngsters; many regard the leisure undertakings as their personal prerogative, and realm, circumvent jumping into the bandwagon, and follow their own circumstances: budget, time, typical choices and abilities. They use these to relax and earn satisfaction, instead of competing with others, and letting current trends invade their personal spaces. For instance, traditional hobbies like gardening, reading, and so on, still have billions of followers.

Thus, disputes aside, although some have started integrating their free time pursuits with the currently accepted definition of hobbies, a majority remain unaffected, and still continue with their favourite recreational engagements, defying this notion.
