Many people want their country to host an international sporting event.
Others believe that international sporting events bring more problems than benefits.
Why host global sporting carnivals
This is best of promoting sporting culture in the country: inspire locals to take up sports as a career, or follow it to lead a healthy lifestyle
This can also assist in establishing sports as an industry that generates employment for millions, and business worth billions, and help governments gross huge revenues through taxes
This can put a country prominently on the global map, bringing tourists and also investors later
Why these pose problems
The hosts have to spend extravagantly to organize such events, the debt created takes a long time to repay
Precious real estate must be converted into sporting facilities, which can never be used for other things, and these venues fall into disuse
The inhabitants of hosts cities face immense problems when preparations are going on, and also when games are progressing
There is a fierce debate about hosting global sporting carnivals like olympics since some are quite enthusiastic about it, but others are against such programs, for they feel these can cause numerous problems.
There is large support for such events; these have the potential to promote an active sporting culture among the local populace. When natives, especially the youth, witness players from different parts of the world come and compete in a variety of sporting disciplines, in their own country, they get inspired to take up sports as their professional career, or at least healthy lifestyles. For instance, the Asian games of 1982 that were held in New Delhi were a turning point for India as millions of youngsters were persuaded to enroll for athletics, football, and so on, without the government needing to spend millions on promotional campaigns for sports.
Similarly, these extravaganzas can aid in turning sports into a full-fledged industry that can generate direct and indirect employment for millions, across a cross-section of skills, and business worth billions, in domains, sometimes not even related to sports. Moreover, regimes also benefit from these activities, by virtue of them grossing huge revenues by taxing various activities related to this industry.
However, the only objection raised by critics of such organisations, is that these can render precious urban land parcels useless as these cannot be re-assigned for other purposes, and often fall into disuse once the games are over, but this challenge can be surmounted by adopting prudent policy of making these locations accessible, and permitting local games and championship.
In hindsight, I feel that the views of the skeptical lobby should be ignored in the larger public interest and the enduring benefits international sporting spectacles can bring around and promote healthy lifestyles and employment.
There is a fierce debate about hosting global sporting carnivals like olympics since some are quite enthusiastic about it, but others are against such programs, for they feel these can cause numerous problems. I will analyse this matter profoundly, and share a justified opinion.
