Everybody should donate a fixed amount of their income to support charity. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Agree/yes. Why?
- If everyone resorted to this practice, it will help charities to raise predictable amount of monetary resources every year
- This will help donors to reciprocate for what they receive from the society - in the form of subsidized education, healthcare and other support
- Reinforce their commitment to the betterment of their surroundings
- Get certain tax rebates
Disagree/yes. Why?
- This is likely to create chaotic situation for those who have meager earnings and find it hard to cope with expenses
- This move is likely to backfire as many may resent this and start abstaining from participating in altruistic activities
- When one is paying taxes and also contributing to social security, it should be their prerogative
Even though the suggestion of giving away a certain proportion of earnings to philanthropy has been gaining traction I find little substance in this and fail to concur with it.
At the outset, those rallying behind this notion base their opinion on the assumption that it would help the organizations engaged in charitable undertakings plan and implement their relief programs with great certainty, and impact the deprived and marginalized sections of population favorably. This section is often seen citing the example of aid endeavors being run in numerous African countries that need constant financial bolstering, but are seen lagging behind their targets because of paucity of resources. Thus if this practice were followed, the task of NGOs would become less daunting.
Nevertheless, the enthusiasm expressed about this arrangement invites rampant skepticism, that is founded firmly on the ground reality, reflecting the inability of the majority of the global populace to comply with this norm. Barring a few fortunate such as Bill Gates and Elon Musk, most are found struggling to make their ends meet, and compelling or persuading them to follow this edict will make them vulnerable to financial chaos.
Similarly, this is likely to create resentment among many, dissuading them from participating in such altruistic missions altogether; they may feel that they are being robbed of their hard earned money. Likewise, it is a general perception that when one is paying social security and welfare tax, why should they be coerced to bear this additional financial burden.
In hindsight, such settings are unlikely to bring any favorable yield but instead cause displeasure and discontent, and even undermine the charity sector in the long run, drying out the funds from a major section of donors; hence this policy must not be followed at all.
