Many parents use punishment to teach the difference between right and wrong to kids. Many think punishment is unnecessary to help children learn the distinction between right and wrong. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is a lobby that believes the punishment is imperative for the young ones to make them competent in differentiating the right from wrong. This essay shall justify the rationale behind their perspective and discuss that of others.

Many are in favour of this practice. A slew of parents deploy this practice to make their wards comprehend the distinction between right and wrong since they believe such actions alleviates the tendency of repeating the same mistakes all over again in the little ones. This helps impart lessons for life as they always give a second thought before undertaking an erroneous or wrongful act, pushing them to mend their ways, thereby turning them into rational adults later in life. Moreover, it helps in inculcating a sense of discipline among the youngsters which serves as a deterrent to them against transcending the limits set by their mothers and fathers.

However, punishment leaves a profound impression on these tender minds, as detractors of retribution profess, which affects the psyche of young individuals prominently, causing distortions in their behaviour. Since reprimanding instills fear in some sensitive children, owing to which they become introverts when they grow into adults, and due to the lack of confidence they encounter a wide array of challenges in their life later on. Similarly,  some may turn out to be rebels by virtue of which they go astray from the paths directed by their parents, leading to severe repercussions such as involvement in fallacious acts, evolution of criminal instincts, and so on.

To reiterate, I strongly feel that the employment of punishment by parents in order to teach moral lessons to their wards is accompanied by a plethora of negative aspects since such actions adversely affect the mental wellbeing of the tender minds and the aftermath might be irrevocable.
