Elderly people are nowadays being sent to old aged homes rather than being looked after by a family. Do the advantages of old aged homes outweigh the disadvantages?

In the era when senior citizens have no other place other than old age homes, a profound discussion has started over the pros and cons of these facilities. In this essay, I shall be discussing whether the former outshine the latter or not.

The  boarding and lodging facilities carry a major advantage, these are equipped with amenities and support systems that are designed and fitted to suit the needs of those in their advanced age. For instance, these establishments have lifts and walking ramps instead of stairs, and toilet seats of sufficient height to prevent any injuries. This makes it easier for the elderly occupants to move around and carry out their routine tasks effortlessly without external help. Similarly, these places also offer round the clock medical support, by virtue of the presence of doctors and nurses throughout the day and night.

Moreover, security is another major factor which makes retirement homes favorable locations for the lonely aged individuals or couples. Since these complexes are managed and monitored by security personnel, the older people can live without fear of becoming victims of crimes like robbery, mugging and so on, which otherwise is impossible to render.

However, all the support and ease provided by such places cannot conceal the gloomy environment they have since those living in these homes are in their autumn years and are vulnerable to disease and death. This scenario makes people desperate as they observe their co-inhabitants falling sick and dying. Additionally, these locations are a financial burden on society since it must allocate invaluable public money to fund these services.

Overall, I strongly feel that the benefits extended by homes for the ageing fail to exceed the shortcomings, it is in fact the other way round, owing to morbid surroundings.
