Global warming is
one of the biggest threats humans face in the 21st Century and sea levels are
continuing to rise at alarming rates.
What problems are
associated with this and what are some possible solutions.
Rapidly rising global temperatures are a
growing menace and a major challenge for mankind in the contemporary times, for
these have a potential to jeopardize human life. It is hence, a task of
paramount importance to find a plausible mechanism to surmount this pressing
problem.
The most prominent of the threats resulting
from this phenomenon is an unprecedented increment in the levels of seawater
due to rapidly melting glaciers and ice at poles. This has endangered the very
existence of the coastal areas and cities like Mumbai, Sydney, Los Angeles and
Singapore to name a few, which may be submerged under seawater in next few
decades if the warming of the environment of the planet is not arrested right
away.
Moreover, the impact of this occurrence
would not stop here, as more and more
disastrous effects have become visible in the form of rapid climatic shifts and
extreme weather patterns. More recently, extremely long summers with scorching
heat in the tropical regions, and extended winters with temperatures dipping
far below the freezing point are a new normal today. Similarly, droughts and
inland flooding have become more frequent which were formerly unheard of.
The remedy for this perilous weather
condition, nevertheless, lies with no one else but mankind, the primary force
behind this catastrophic change. It is the need of the hour to immediately halt
deforestation so that excessive release of carbon dioxide in the environment
can be curtailed. Similarly, reducing dependence on fossil fuels for energy
requirements would go a long way in cutting down emission of greenhouse gases.
Hence, undoubtedly global warming is
casting an evil shadow on the very existence of humanity and the future of this
planet. It is therefore extremely important to take remedial actions as soon as
possible.
