Nowadays people
can buy a large variety of household goods, more than ever before in most
countries in the world. Is this a good or bad development? Give your opinion
and examples.
Easy accessibility of household commodities, world over, has
ensued a debate of sorts between various schools of thought over the impact of
this new development on individuals, society, economy, as well as the
environment. While some term this as a highly beneficial trend, others see it
as negative.
Baring a few, most hail this phenomenon: such facilitation
is stimulating growth of consumerist economies by boosting economic
productivity. When people buy something they need as per their convenience, they
aid in invigorating sales of consumer goods; thereby spurring demand for higher
production, and hence, employment. Consequently, money flows increase in the economy
in form of salaries, and contribute to economic prosperity with higher
purchasing power.
Moreover, this not so old trend is helping drive home a huge
indirect benefit, in form of blurring
differences between the haves and have-nots. Domestic commodities are no more
novelties. They are available in variable quality and prices, and can be
afforded by all, regardless of economic background; thus eliminating any chance
of jealousy between diverse and
different income groups: everybody is able to enjoy the goods they desire for.
However, conveniently available goods are casting an evil shadow
on the environment, as many propose. People buying domestic items, at their
convenience, is contributing to an ever-rising pollution not only through
manufacturing but also the use, and indiscriminate use of natural resources.
Any increment in demand for commodities must be complimented by an increase in production; thus predisposing natural
resources to mindless exploitation; and use of fuel for processing; thus churning
out massive emissions.
To conclude, controversies apart, this development is a
positive development with everybody being able to access household articles: it
is helping economies and removing disparities. However, there is a need to
address environmental concerns too.
