Nowadays celebrities earn more money than politicians. What are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or negative development?
The emoluments of
accomplished personalities in entertainment, sports and so on, exceed that of
policymakers. This dissimilarity stems from umpteen grounds, but it nonetheless
an effulgent side, and is likely to impact social environment favorably.
This imbalance springs from
the variations in the sources of income: where those working in media, sports
and art, to name a few, have multiple venues from where they obtain financial
receipts, lawmakers only have a wages from the state to boast of. To corroborate,
actors, players and musicians, apart from earning astronomically from their
primary occupations, gain high paying engagements, in the form of assignments
for advertisements, endorsements, and as brand ambassadors, of renowned
consumer good brands; and invites to extravaganzas, pageants and events, raising
their remuneration manifolds, while elected representatives only get monthly
salaries, besides some additional perks.
This sharpening gap in the
earnings might deepen prove to deleterious by engendering craving among the lawmakers,
as some allege despite their view being misplaced, to discover ways to blur this
gap, and eventually, resort to unlawful and unfair practices, resulting in scandals
with public money being siphoned off to fill the personal coffers.
Nonetheless, the scepticism is
overwhelmed by rich dividends this phenomenon is likely to fetch: it will leave
only serious contenders in the fray as those influenced by the glare of riches
will join occupations in the entertainment and sports, while those willing to
devote their life for the ameliorating social environment, without expecting
sumptuous financial dividends in reciprocation, will embrace politics as a
selfless endeavour.
In hindsight, the disparity in compensation of celebrated entertainers and sports personalities and policymakers is driven by multitude of openings one has at their disposal, but notwithstanding the cynicism being elicited, it is bound to bring in devoted individuals into governance.
This gap, despite proving to
be rewarding, in terms of inspiring youth to work hard to gain such status, is
likely to prove to be deleterious in the long run; it is going to become hard
to persuade intelligent and dedicated youngsters to enter into social service,
and work for betterment of society by becoming a part of governance, leaving
only mediocre talent to lead the nation.
