Sports encourage competition rather
than cooperation. Therefore, sports should not be encouraged at school. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?
Schooling is all about mental and physical development of
children, in which sports, is believed to have an essential role even though
some suggest that this extracurricular activity can affect the pupils
negatively since it teaches about competition and not cooperation, unlike
originally envisaged. Hence they favor shelving this activity from the school
syllabus.
Practicing sports can adversely impact the minds of young
learners as they, while playing different games tend to become aggressive and
impulsive. Sports promote an attitude to win, and this where the problem lies;
the tender minds are trained to win even if it results in bitter rivalry
between classmates. This promotes an atmosphere that may not be considered to
be conducive for harmonious living.
However, the fears being allayed about disruptive effect of
sports can be out rightly rejected. ‘Sports’ as an activity plays a pivotal
role in development of overall personality of the students. As various studies
suggest, playing games and participation in a sporting activity nurtures cognitive
abilities required for appreciating and judging situations, and finding ways to
solve problems. Such activities also teach children to be more patient and
learn to accept victories and defeats decently, and thus prevent violent behavior.
Apart from that sports, especially games that entail playing
in a team, is all about for team work; strategic planning in groups; and creating
coordination with other team members. On top of that, skills picked up while practicing
sports can be really helpful for the children. They learn about coexistence and
living in harmony with people with contrasting views by picking up critical
hints about working together in teams.
To conclude, I feel that children should be encouraged to
play and participate in sports as this activity is laden with multiple
benefits.
