With trade, travel and business rising rapidly across the
globe, the world is becoming a smaller place to live. Some people have started
comparing the current scenario to a global village. This aspect has prompted
some people to raise demands for a single global language, but some sections
are averse to this idea.
In the current scenario, the bi-lateral trade and multilateral
trade is expanding rapidly across the planet. The business communities are
therefore demanding adopting a universal official language. Many sections of the
trading communities feel that enacting a universal linguistic code world would certainly
help in removing many hurdles, as the representatives of companies from different
parts of the world would be in a position to communicate clearly. As per them,
using a common international language would encourage and boost the business
environment and would bring benefits to all participating parties, countries
and ultimately the human society.
Moreover, imposing a single language would also assist in the
proliferation of standardized education across the planet. People from diverse
cultures and backgrounds would be able to access standardized educational resources
to boost their skills, for instance English has been adopted as a common language
of instruction in numerous varsities across the world.
On the contrary, a big lobby of conservationists and purists
which vouches for retention of linguistic diversity feels adopting a single language
is not only impractical, but it would also threaten the local and native
languages. They feel that cultures are closely associated with their native languages
and substituting local languages with a single language would lead to extermination
of indegeneous social values and customs.
In conclusion, I personally feel that although, the fears
allayed by the conservationists are true to some extent, the adoption of uniform
global language would bring numerous advantages.
