Crime-based fiction and non-fiction narratives, in printed versions and audio-visual presentations, have been gaining favors from more and more. This can be attributed to several causes, and has variable effects on the audience. 

To commence with, the primary driver of this craving is the innate animal instincts that persuade one to access the content that portrays violence, anti-social acts and sufferings of victims, thereby letting some experience happiness in perversion and others express sympathy at the plight of sufferers. Similarly, the suspense created by this kind of literature, soap operas and documentaries, tend to make readers and viewers curious, making them go for more. Moreover, many find novels and television series of this type quite fascinating as the plots challenge their investigative skills and bring detectives out of them. 

This phenomenon allows the followers of this style of stories and audio-visual showcasing to familiarize with the misery of the affected and ruthlessness of perpetrators without actually breaking the law themselves. Likewise, a majority reports that they are able to enlighten themselves about the threats and dangers lurking around them, and embrace appropriate precautions as safeguards against incidence of unlawful and illegal endeavors. 

However, there is a darker side to this propensity: a general fear is expressed about drawing inspiration from such portrayals in books and on television, and emulating them in real life; especially youngsters are the most vulnerable group who are likely to reenact what they read and see, and their surroundings even though these utterances have little factual evidence in support.  

Overall, the spirit of inquiry, the inherited biological traits, and profound desire to inform oneself about the jeopardies that could adversely affect the safety, have helped sustain the popularity of this genre; and in a way, this has positively impacted society.
