Modern times are witnessing poor lifestyle choices rising, persuading a debate that measures should be embraced to ensure well being, but who should take the onus of this. While some suggest that one should take the ownership in this case, others feel that the state should handle this.  

 

Those in favor of governments donning the mantle for safeguarding public health  feel that it is its duty since it has resources and expertise to deal with a task of such monumental dimensions. Individuals are bereft of knowledge of how to negotiate the challenge of sustaining their well being owing to their overwhelming professional engagements, and have little time to seek mediums to enlighten themselves, by the politicians have all the mediums and motives to do so, such as    imposing heavy taxes on unhealthy food products consumers; offering subsidies on nutritional food; enforcing food labeling on products; and by enlightening about healthy options, to name a few. 


Nevertheless, proponents of the individuals looking after their wellness propound that motivation to live a healthy life pattern should be personal, so that they can decide upon themselves which path they want to follow, as it is a matter of autonomy. Adding to this, everyone is aware of the choices they make and it is all dependent on their preferences and circumstances, and they are equipped with the knowledge of what health consequences it will lead to in future. Numerous studies revealed that, if there one can never be forced to follow a regime unless they  are convinced: it will fetch little yield.


Overall, self affirmation is the essential criteria for leading  a healthy lifestyle. The state can only support certain acts like campaigns and create public awareness, nonetheless the onus rests on people to follow, or not to follow.
