Undeniably, there is a fierce debate among varied sections that one should not be allowed after attaining the age of 65, while others dissent with the notion and support the freedom of work in any age. I shall critically analyze this matter, and elucidate my views in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, a school of thought professes that engaging professionally beyond 65 should not be allowed. After working for almost 30 years people need rest, for they have compromised their invaluable moments for their children, earning bread and butter, and have been busy in establishing the future of their wards and their careers. Therefore, there must be some law, allowing them to take rest from their duties. After all, they need to spend some quality time with their family and friends, and also focus on their own hobbies, which they never got a chance to engage with.

Nevertheless, the other lobby disregards the former views and asserts that there must be a freedom to work, irrespective of any age. In the globalization era, everyone should be free to make their own decisions to attain their wishes. Similarly,  maintaining the standard of living makes it  mandatory to work to sustain their families. Moreover, businesses and industries need experienced individuals  to guide their organizations to prosperity. Thus, if seasoned employees excel in a particular domain, they can prove to be big assets as they can share their learnings with the team. 

To recapitulate, I vehemently agree with the latter view that the government should not restrict the age limit to work, it must be the individual prerogative instead: if someone is capable of weathering stress, they should be allowed to continue with employment.

There is a fierce debate going on in society about the retirement age of working professionals. Some agree with the notion that one should be relieved of their professional obligations once they turn  65, while others dissent by saying that it should be an individual prerogative. I will discuss both the aspects in the upcoming paragraphs and share my viewpoint on it.

To start with, proponents of this setting assert that this will help in replacing an aging workforce with fresh talent,  helping the young generation to get into the market and explore opportunities, resulting in decreasing unemployment. Apart from that, after ceasing to work, one can get more time to focus on their overall well-being and practice new hobbies and skills in terms of spending leisure time with family and friends. For example, Britain implemented a retirement age in 2022 and witnessed a sharp decline in the new OPD registration among senior citizens and marked 2024 as a “Health reform year” by introducing hobby classes for retirees to promote active and healthy aging.

Nevertheless, opponents of this view suggest that one should not be forced to leave work, and that the choice should be always theirs. If they are physically, mentally fit and continue to work, they should be extended liberty to continue: they can bring years of experience and expertise in the field, helping new recruits  to learn more quickly. Furthermore, it has been observed by many that abruptly ending a career leads to stressful and depressed life if they do not have any friends and family around.

To capitulate, although mandatory retirement age has its own benefits, providing flexibility or opting for a  more liberal approach will always be beneficial and equitable, and let one decide as per their typical circumstances.

 One should retire at 65. Why? 

• Beyond a certain age, people become mentally and physically weak, incapable of handling stress, eventually exposing them to ailments and disorder. This affects their efficiency 

• They can also expose themselves to errors and accidents, jeopardizing their and the safety of others

• When  these people retire, only then the positions for young and energetic people will be created, helping overcome joblessness among young people.    

One should be allowed to continue until they wish not to. Why?   

• They might be exposed to financial crises 

• This will help them to avoid loneliness and depression

• They may feel abandoned since they have worked hard long enough for their employers   

The contemporary public discourse revolves around the issue of whether one should be relieved of their professional obligations once they are 65, or should they get the leverage to be in employment as per their choice. This essay will explain both points of view and share a justified verdict. 

To begin with,  the primary reason to retire is that the aged have served their positions for long, and with age catching up they tend to lose their agility and efficiency, making it imperative that they should be given rest, so that their place can be taken up by the younger generation who could perform effectively with their skill set and ideas. This will also help in mitigating joblessness among the skilled young workforce.  Besides this, an individual has worked thousands of hours in their lifespan that they forget to spend quality time with their loved ones while working on their career paths and getting relieved at 65 will give them the opportunity to spend that quality time and make it memorable while life lasts. 

Nevertheless,  those in favor of allowing one to continue beyond the conventional retirement age feel that those approaching their autumn years,  if rested, might face several challenges: feeling lonely and abandoned which can also lead towards making harsh decisions on themselves. Financial  crises is another challenge that they might face after retirement. While working they were earning hefty and fixed pay cheques, but post retirement that scenario can change into bare bones; not all the companies take good care of their retired personnel. 

In hindsight, although there are advantages of being relieved from jobs after  65, in my opinion, it should be completely an individual prerogative whether they feel like retiring, or they want to continue working as per their desire.
