Full-time university students spend a lot of time studying, however they should perform other activities too. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Agree

  • Apart from education, learners must also foster social skills

  • This can  also assist in fostering some other abilities: arts, sports,  or other

  • It can  help earn a break from the mundane

Disagree

  •  University courses cost several arms and several legs, thus it should be the primary goal of learners

  • This may cause disruption in studies

A school of thought suggests that the learners studying in universities should allocate some time to cocurricular activities apart from pursuing their studies because this can help them learn some extra skills, and also unwind. I strongly support this suggestion, and shall elaborate my stand in the following paragraphs.

Even though one might profess that since university courses cost an arm and a leg, and thus, one must remain devoted to their academic pursuits to avoid any distraction, it is extremely essential to earn a chance to escape the mundane of incessant  academic engagement. This can act as a break and also a healthy distraction, which eventually allows pupils to reinvigorate themselves, and enhance their focus on their primary task: gaining a degree. For example, all the universities in the USA mandate involvement of students in sports, arts, or other non-academic undertakings, to allow a change in routine. Consequently, most of the graduates from these varsities tend to excel academically.

Similarly, engaging in extra-curricular undertakings can also assist university goers to foster critical social skills they are going to use as soon as they complete their education. Ones studying for bachelors or masters are usually aged between 18 and 22, a juncture when they must train themselves to interact meaningfully with others in their surroundings, whether in their social circles or in the prospective professional domain. This aspect is duly acknowledged by globally-acclaimed universities, and so they regularly organise festivals and public meetings in their campuses to expose students to the outer world.

To conclude, completing a degree at university successfully is of paramount importance, exclusive focus on studies can prove to be counterproductive. Therefore, it is essential to participate in endeavors different from formal syllabus to get a respite.

Introduction 1:

It is generally observed that the university curriculum is becoming extremely complex, posing an extreme stress on learners, and to escape such taxing routine some suggest that they should also undertake cocurricular activities. I completely concur with this proposal because it can afford opportunities to learn extra skills and also help unwind.

University education is considered key to success, and those studying focus completely on academic studies. However,  they should participate in other activities too, as some suggest. I completely agree with the suggestion that students also focus on extra skills.

Most students believe that they should prioritize academic studies because university courses  cost an arm and a leg, and they do not want to be distracted from studies. Nevertheless,  if they participate in other cocurricular activities, it will be beneficial for their mental health. Sometimes learners feel stressed due to studying long hours which can cause depression and other mental health problems. Thus, indulging themselves in other extra skills can help them earn a much required healthy distraction,  making them feel relaxed.

Similarly,  they can also make friends, and create strong social ties that will help them in future. A recent study by Northern college proves that the students who are more active socially gain more opportunities as compared to those who just focus on their academic tasks because they tend to use these links to gain better work openings through these networks. Mr. Harkirat Singh, an emerging  Indian badminton player admits gaining chances to get expert coaching in this sport through his friends.

Furthermore, participating in other endeavors develop important life skills that textbooks cannot teach such as team work and  leadership,  among others, and also improve communication skills as well as boost confidence, something extremely valuable for their future. Students joining clubs or social groups often feel connected and supported, which improves overall university experience.

In conclusion, although academic studies require significant dedication, full time university students should also engage in other activities: involving in a variety of experiences leads to better mental health, stronger skill development, and an enjoyable and successful university journey.

Why should they engage in something apart from studies

·         Helps improve skills, talents and mental ability

·         Helps sustain a balanced and stress-free life

·         Helps in building social contacts.

 Why not?

·         University courses cost several arms and several legs, thus it should be the primary goal of learners

With the educational system and syllabus becoming sophisticated, many have started suggesting that learners engaged in regular courses, must also indulge in some extracurricular endeavors to bolster their physical and mental well being. Nevertheless, there are contrasting views too in this regard.

The growing demands of the modern curriculum at the varsities necessitates extra efforts from the learners which sometimes makes them dedicate long hours to their studies. This leaves them with little spare time to relax and rejuvenate, which is extremely critical for not only their health but also for their morale. Thus, they should, whenever possible, break this mundane and undertake some extra or co curricular activities to earn a much needed respite from grueling academic routines.

Moreover, doing this can go a long way in restoring their enthusiasm towards the studies and also, heightening their concentration, making their university pursuits more enriching, as well as enjoyable. Similarly,  such interludes  also help university goers socialize with their peers and the outer world, which many times aid in getting a grasp of a crucial life skill: interacting with the world that is much maturer than they had encountered during their schooling, assisting in formation of broader world view.

Nonetheless, the critics to this view deride it vehemently. This lobby asserts that the sole objective of the learners should be to attain their scholastic goals for which many are paying through their nose. Indulging in anything, unrelated to studies, might cause a distraction and take students away from their objectives, affecting their outcomes and impeding their professional progress later.

In hindsight, I feel even though the skepticism over this suggestion is not unfounded, it is extremely important for the learners to undertake certain extracurricular activities:  this would indirectly also facilitate better academic performance.
