Public transport Should be made free of charge. Are there more advantages or disadvantages to this change?

Public transport Should be made free of charge
Ielts Essay Public Transport

The proposal of laying Public modes of transportation free of cost at the disposal of people has become a controversial issue: although it promises to offer certain merits on the grounds of affordability, it also carries many pitfalls: it may pose hardships for the state.

Offering public modes of travelling would go a long way in helping the needy sections of teh society, especially the poor - who are unable to travel farther from their homes  to get appropriate employment due to not being able to afford even the nominal fares, the students and the old - who do not have any source of income. This would ease burden of having to pay for travelling, off these classes, and they would find it easy to use the money saved in other critical areas.

However / Having said that, it is hard to overlook associated challenges with the proposal. When public mediums would be offered at no cost, it may provoke people to misuse the facilities, like travelling for leisure and without purpose. It is a commonly believed that people only respect something when it comes at a price.
On the top of that, implementation of free public transport policy is bound to create several problems for the government: it will find it hard to meet expenses incurred on expanding the fleet; maintaining the assets; and paying the concerned staff, as there will be no means to earn revenue for these services. Consequently, all the money will have to be sourced from the government treasury.

Hence, I feel that offering public modes of commuting to everybody would be highly disadvantageous. These services, in my view, should be only offered to the needy, and the ones who can afford should be made to pay.
