There is a fierce demand echoing the power corridors to focus on internal affairs, while some stress the need to raise the stakes in and at international issues. This essay shall critically analyse both viewpoints and draw a justified conclusion.

To start with, it is often argued that the governments have a primary duty to address domestic issues: citizens expect economic stability, healthcare, education, and law and order from those elected to represent them. Since the overall well-being of the population can be severely affected when these basic needs are not met, many believe that policy makers should invest their energy into resolving internal issues before looking outward.

However, some believe that worldwide problems require urgent and collective action from policymakers, challenges; climate change, pandemic, terrorism, and international conflicts, and so forth; transcend national boundaries and can have widespread ramifications. For instance, the recent global health crisis followed by the COVID pandemic demonstrated that international cooperation is indispensable and long-term stability can only be ensured if nations support and collaborate with each other, making it imperative to render precedence of transnational issues.

Moreover, a strong focussed foreign policy is beneficial to the development of a country. Engagements with neighbours and other leaders strengthen global trade, diplomatic partnerships, intelligence sharing, all of which boost internal and external credibility and domestic stability. For instance, rising oil prices can profoundly impact the domestic environment, for it can lead to inflationary tendencies, which can only be controlled through bi-lateral and multilateral trade agreements that attempt maneuvering through the volatile fossil fuel market.  

In hindsight, although focusing on domestic matters is essential for national prosperity, lawmakers should also play a significant role in tackling global issues for both are intricately entwined, complementing each other in a highly globalised concurrent era.
