In schools and universities, some girls tend to choose arts subjects, while boys choose to study science subjects. What are the reasons? Do you think this trend should be changed?
As per conventional academic preferences, girls usually opt for humanities, such as history, and political science, to name a few, whereas boys are inclined towards STEM subjects. There is a need to evaluate attributes for such propensity since this disparity should be discouraged for the larger interest of society.
It has been observed that this phenomenon has persisted for centuries, primarily due to the lack of prominent female role models who could inspire others to pursue STEM subjects in the past. To exemplify this, a study conducted by historians at BBC, revealed that only 10 percent of female academic practitioners have successfully specialized in STEM disciplines. The underlying reason behind this trend is generally attributed to the stereotypical social mindset prevalent.
Furthermore, many argue that education is an investment, and in the near future, females might be expected to manage household responsibilities, whereas males, on the other hand, are perceived to require technical expertise as they are likely to become the bread earners for their families. Consequently, it was deemed more appropriate to educate men in fields that ensured financial stability - a deeply rooted orthodox belief that has been perpetuated for generations.
Indeed, in the contemporary world, gender should never determine academic leanings. The belief that men are more suited for technical fields, while women should focus on household responsibilities is outdated and unjustified. With the advancement of education and equal opportunities, females have consistently proven their competence in STEM disciplines, excelling as scientists, engineers, and innovators.
Therefore, breaking this traditional barrier is critical for building a more balanced and progressive social environment, wherein both men and women can contribute equally to scientific and technological advancements.
