Advancements
in technology may have helped improve the quality of life to a great extent; this, however, has also led to an
unnecessary squabble about these advancements predisposing social disparities. How
far this notion is true, is an issue worth a deep debate.
Technology, as some fear, has exacerbated disparities between
the haves and have-nots, since the ones, who can afford exploits of
innovations, are leading a lavish life fuelled by all possible comforts. They
have hi-tech equipment at their service: gadgets and facilities that only money
can buy. This leaves ones with scanty resources at a disadvantage: they can do
no more but fascinate about such lifestyles.
On the contrary, there is a sizeable group that ridicules the
thought of technology predisposing escalation of imbalances in the society. As
per them, technology has instead helped bridge gaps between people by bringing
education at the doorstep of everyone, regardless socio-economic backgrounds.
Latest introductions have helped create
venues for people from a cross-section of society, to get better education without
shelling out too much money which is helping people improve their chances of
getting better incomes in not too distant future.
Moreover, the recent advancements in various fields have brought about a great difference in the
way food is produced today – what used to be a novelty of rich and a luxury for
the poor has become easily available to all – thus mitigating the social differences;
nobody is dying of hunger today. Moreover, better methods of treating ailments
have made it easier for even the impoverished to access affordable medical
facilities today.
Hence, I personally feel, technology has helped evaporate imbalances between demographies belonging to diverse economic strata, and those
deriding technological development, and terming it as a cause of social polarization, are anti-development
lobbyists.
