The role of television news and media has
irked certain sections of social theorists, who are up in arms because of
adverse impact these have been having on the mindsets of people. I completely
agree with this notion, news on TV, and the media are promoting negative
influences, by creating an atmosphere of bitterness and distortions, and also
bringing around unhappy sentiments.
The negative impact of media can be easily
witnessed all around with even common people harboring mistrust against their
own co-inhabitants hailing from different ethnic backgrounds, which can
sometimes precipitate into civil unrest and ethnic tussle. This is all because
of the irresponsible and biased attitude, either intentional or unintentional, the producers and reporters adopt while
reporting certain events.
On the top of that, exaggerated and ill-informed
views, better termed as rumors, are a common sight today, which has a potential
of causing public panic. Media houses hardly mind serving unauthenticated information,
and that also over-stated, to the public – just to stay ahead of the
competition – without thinking twice about the impact of such unprofessional behavior.
This can be more visible in cases of fateful incidents, war and natural
calamities.
Moreover, in many cases, it has been
experienced that media is often responsible creating an atmosphere of hopelessness
and desperation by excessive focus on reporting criminal activities. It is
although done with good intentions, of informing the public, the outcomes of reporting
of such instances causes anguish among the audience, with people becoming
overcautious, and abandoning hopes of things changing around.
