Some people feel that entertainers (e.g. film starts, pop musicians or sports stars) are paid too much money. Do you agree or disagree? Which other types of job should be highly paid?

Some people feel that entertainers (e.g. film starts, pop musicians or sports stars) are paid too much money. Do you agree or disagree? Which other types of job should be highly paid?

Disagree - no they are not earning too much
  • They have a short span of time to earn money: they are engaged in a volatile occupation that does not offer any security. An abrupt ending to career will bring disaster, leaving these people with little to subsist. However, others have a much longer span to earn in which they can earn continuously; thus, these personalities earn just enough to survive.
  • These people have to invest hugely in upkeep of their image and fitness so that they remain in demand and in form. This eats  away a lot of their savings and earnings
  • Their popularity is cashed by consumer companies who use their face value to earn colossal sums of money, so how can the earnings of these individuals be exaggerated.
Agree - yes, they are earning beyond what they should
  • They are not doing anything productive for the society, so why so much should be paid to them
Other occupations

Although the earnings of the individuals in the entertainment industry are under a critical scanner; some feel these exceed the justified limits, I feel this perception is misplaced - disjointed from the reality of volatility and economic contribution of this sector, but do feel that there are other occupations which should be compensated better.

Those  cynical of the remuneration being paid to film stars, players and musicians, profess that these people rarely do anything benefitting society, unlike their counterparts engaged in the field of medicine, and other consequential domains. For instance, engineers, nurses, and teachers, work hard to not only safeguard society from current and emerging challenges but also shape future generations, whereas recreational work only has short-term impact on the audience.

Nevertheless, the view of skeptics overlooks the nature of occupations entertainers are involved in. Undeniably, sports, motion pictures, and music, among others, exhibit a volatile nature, exposing performers to uncertainties: going out of form, or losing their charm, could predispose them to a lifelong struggle. Moreover, these performers augment economic productivity through their work. To corroborate, the recreation sector generates multi-faceted employment for millions, business work billions and a rich bounty of taxes for  policymakers, justifying their astronomical wages.

Apart from these professionals, there are some worthy recipients of higher emoluments than their current salaries. All health professionals, including doctors and other healthcare givers, researchers exploring disease and their remedies; and the ones engaged in other scientific domains, are deserving candidates for better wages, for their contributions are unparalleled and critical for the development of society.

Overall, by virtue of contributing to the national economies, and working in a sector known for its unpredictable behaviour, the compensation of entertainers can be considered to be fair, but certain other occupations also should be paid better.
