Drawback

- Distraction

- Dropping out of studies

Benefits

- Financial independence and boosts

- Gain exposure of the professional working environment

Nowadays, several learners have developed a propensity to obtain part-time gainful employment, in the form of evening or weekend jobs to meet their expenses. This, although has a potential to cause distraction, it allows youngsters to learn about financial independence and taking responsibilities.

In concurrent times, numerous learners have been observed joining some kind of temporary work, in the evenings or at the weekends. This  phenomenon  has been hailed as one laden with a plethora of benefits despite having certain pitfalls.

To start with, this trend is thought to be weighed down by a couple of shortcomings: causing distraction in studies and making youngsters arrogant. Although the instances have been rare/sporadic, some learners tend to go astray due to being either overburdened with work, or lured by money, which in extreme cases pushes them to abandon studies. Similarly, many also stop paying heed to the advice  and guidance of their parents since they feel that they are no more dependent on the latter.

Having said that, this newly evolving propensity has little room for pessimism, as per various studies conducted to evaluate the impact of working along with gaining education on the pupils, which suggest that instead of causing a burden, taking up a job aids youngsters in not only experiencing certain level of financial independence - where  they do not have to rely on their parents for their personal expenses, but also augments their self-esteem and eventually their confidence.

Furthermore, this also brings young individuals face to face with an unprecedented reward, an opportunity to gain exposure of the professional working environment which they will have to embrace/join once they are done with their academic pursuits. The knowledge gained through such endeavours helps youngsters prepare themselves better for their professional life by equipping them with appropriate interpersonal skills.

Overall, controversies apart, young learners taking up temporary jobs carries numerous upsides which easily exceed flaws phenomenally. Therefore, it will be in the interest of young students if they engage in part-time work.
