In many countries, very few young people read newspapers or follow the news on TV. What do you think are the causes of this?
What solutions can you suggest?

World over, the youth are reluctant to gather news and avoid reading the newspapers or watching TV news. This essay shall delve deeply into the matter to discover the causes of this and recommend ways to stem this phenomenon.

Major topics covered on television programmes are related to politics, and most youngsters are disinclined to engage in political discussions as they find it boring. Similarly, it has been observed that the media usually portrays most events negatively, leading to heightened anxiety, so the young audience that is already burdened with academic or professional obligations, tend to stay away from these activities.

Moreover, most at a young age, live in a bubble of their own that limits them to their social circle; they do not comprehend the implications of the happenings around the world. They are more keen on playing video games, browsing social media, and following the latest fad; these endeavors take up most of their time, leaving them with little energy and motivation to follow mundane news.

Nevertheless, a plethora of methods can address this alarming situation. Schools should schedule general knowledge quizzes periodically, based on current affairs, especially related to science and history. For instance, Chris Hadfield public school mandated that in each class, one student will be presenting one news item daily. This resulted in youngsters discussing with their parents about appropriate topics to present, in turn engendering increased awareness among them. Additionally, media houses should reserve some sections that target the young individuals, keeping their preferences in mind.

Overall, absence of plausible mediums and lack of inclination to update themselves about the current global affairs keeps the young away from reading or watching news, but this propensity can be mended by adopting prudent steps and initiatives by school schools and media.

Today, many people use the internet and smartphones to transfer money to friends, family, and businesses. Is this a positive or negative development?

Today, many people use the internet and smartphones to transfer money to friends, family, and businesses. Is this a positive or negative development?

Today many people use the internet and smartphones to transfer money

Favorable? Why (not what is happening)

  • There is no need to carry cash anymore, safety from pickpockets, or money being lost

  • Convenience as there is no need to wait in queues of banks of ATMs, or look for one around

  • * There is no need to visit brokers for out of city or international remittances

  • Speed of the transactions has increased manifolds  - the moment transfer money button is pressed, the amount is remitted to the receiver anywhere in the world

Negative/ detrimental effects?

  • People sometimes remit more than required or to wrong accounts and it is hard to get a refund

  • It is hard to keep of track of spendings

  • In case the internet is not working properly, people can become helpless

  • If device is lost, it is hard to retrieve details, and people are left high and dry and they must follow long tedious procedure of restoring their accounts

  • Hackers defraud people easily

  • Payment getting stuck in gateways take a long time to be reverted back

  • Exorbitant charges are an additional burden

  • * economic perspective - loss of employment

Contemporary times are witnessing an increasing use of the  internet and smartphone based payment applications. This phenomenon is considered favorable by many, but it also has some drawbacks.

I will discuss these perspectives in the following paragraphs.

Some people are happy due to the advent of the internet and smartphone based payment facilities as they say this has brought numerous benefits. However, others are skeptical and feel that it is having numerous pitfalls.

Contemporary times are witnessing an increasing use of the  internet and smartphone based payment applications. This phenomenon is considered favorable by many, but it also has some drawbacks.

To embark upon discussion, the use of these apps has allowed people to transact quickly with anyone and anywhere, regardless of their own location. One can now purchase online without needing to arrange for cash to make purchases, and going to the  markets to buy something. It has been reported by several survey organizations that millions of buyers are now ordering goods either online, or even from the brick and mortar shops to buy for their needs and remit the due amount without physically being present at the spot.

Similarly, it is extremely convenient for one to transfer money to their loved ones from anywhere in the world to any location without requiring to go to access financial remittance services providers like Union Money Transfer - that used to cost a lot of time. This has helped especially those needing money to overcome contingencies. As per the International Bankers   Association, this facility has aided millions of those living abroad in transmitting money, without delay, to the loved ones in their home countries.

Having said that,  even though sporadic, there have been reports of money getting stuck in gateways and taking weeks to be retrieved, the most prominent of the drawbacks of such an arrangement. Similarly, some have also complained paying more than required,  or to a wrong recipient, making recovery almost next to impossible in many cases.

In hindsight, despite some detrimental effects, this new introduction has come in as a boon for the millions who are experiencing substantial convenience and speed. Thus, this is favorable evolution. I feel the failings can be overcome by adopting prudent measures.

As there is increasing unemployment in the world, while at the same time those who have jobs are working harder and harder, it would be better to have a four-day working week for everyone, and so to create more jobs. In what extent do you agree or disagree?

As there is increasing unemployment in the world, while at the same time those who have jobs are working harder and harder, it would be better to have a four-day working week for everyone, and so to create more jobs. In what extent do you agree or disagree?

In the wake of rising joblessness, many are trying to find appropriate remedies to this, one of suggestions includes shrinking the working week to four days. The supporters of this thought feel this may help create more jobs though there are voices of dissent on this proposal.

This proposal of incorporating a shorter working week, that is of four days, finds its support in the assumption that under such settings the businesses will be forced to hire additional personnel to compensate for day offs of current work force,  and complete the work, in order to sustain operations and meet deadlines. Such a move would render opportunities to others in need of work to get jobs,  thus bringing down the number of jobless individuals.

However, a great skepticism is being expressed about this scheme: many feel such an arrangement  will prove to be counterproductive  since the dearth of employment  is not a deliberate creation but an aftermath of economic down turn, and enforcing such an ambitious plan, will instead exacerbate the situation of unemployment by making organizations vulnerable to losses, by virtue of paying more money for the same amount of work.

Moreover, many feel that the desired outcome, creation of more jobs, may not be achieved, the employers may instead resort to increasing the number working hours on other days to offsetting the  impact of a shorter working week schedule. It seems quite viable that managements of organizations will hardly plan more appointments when they are deriving adequate outputs from the existing work strength.

In conclusion, I feel this idea lacks substance and  is a recipe for disaster. Many organizations are already finding it hard to optimize their cost of operations  due to dwindling revenues, and such a move may do more harm than good.

Nowadays organizations are setting up factories in countries different from where their head office is situated

Nowadays organizations are setting up factories in countries different from where their head office is situated. Are the advantages of this more than disadvantages?

In contemporary times, a new trend has started where renowned companies have commenced setting up their manufacturing units in other nations. This perspective is considered to be laden with certain benefits, but this also has a potential to cause harm as well. In subsequent paragraphs, I will elucidate both sides before concluding.

To begin with, a prominent school of thought propounds that expanding businesses to other regions provides an opportunity to multiply the profits. This is feasible because of the manpower availability at cheaper wages and most importantly resources, due to this, the initial investment cost is remarkably reduced. Further, this also helps other countries by creating employment for the impoverished. For illustration, a recent survey conducted by BBC revealed that Zara has reduced poverty by 20% in Africa by providing jobs to poor people, and the company has witnessed rapid proliferation in their profits too.

However, a lobby of experts asserts that managing business in other countries brings unforeseen risks which could have immense detrimental effects. Any major or fatal accident inside the premises will attract the unwanted attention of local authorities giving the latter an opportunity to tarnish the image of the company, if not bribed as per their requirements. This all is possible because of the difficulty of implementation of health and safety policy. Moreover, such an arrangement also exposes organizations to financial scams committed by permanent local representatives appointed for liasoning who can misappropriate the funds.

Overall, I will conclude that although expansion of business may bring unbearable consequences, the positives surely have an edge over the negatives as it ensures employment across the globe. Hence, in my opinion, setting up factories in different parts of the world is a good option.

In some countries children have very strict rules of behavior, in other countries they are allowed to do almost anything they like. To what extent should children have to follow rules?

In some countries children have very strict rules of behavior, in other countries they are allowed to do almost anything they like. To what extent should children have to follow rules?

In some countries children have very strict rules of behavior

Should follow rules, why? Justify

  • They will learn about civil behavior and etiquette, and learn about differentiating between good and bad

  • They will also learn about lawful approach

  • They will grow up and law abiding people

  • They will learn the value of rules, in the form of deadlines and obligations

They should not follow

  • They may become timid and stop thinking out of the box

  • Some might also turn rebellious

In contemporary times, a fierce debate has ensued among many wherein a lobby opines that there should be some rules to regulate the behavior of young ones; however, there are a few who do not concur with the former statement and think otherwise. The following intends to discuss both sides with relevant examples.

Concurrent times have been witness to a profound debate about whether youngsters should comply with norms or not. The opinions are ambivalent mandating a critical analysis of this issue.

The school of thought favoring the given notion, asserts that imposing restrictions on the behavior of children would help in educating them about lawful behavior and etiquette: to respect the elderly people and learn about the value of discipline, turning them into rational and  empathetic individuals having the ability to differentiate between good and bad, and also treating others well. To exemplify, children in Korea have to follow stringent norms and as a result, when they turn into grown-ups, they possess altruistic qualities and are considered to be the well-behaved individuals across the world.

Moreover, cultivating discipline is also deemed as a training for the future adult life when these juveniles will have to adapt to a system that is governed by certain regulations and stipulations in various manifestations. It is imperative for them to be enlightened about the ramifications of not adhering to the laws in various spheres, so that they can stay away from trouble as grown-ups.

Having said that, some commentators are unconvinced and propound that forcing laws and regulations on young individuals may not always yield positive results as it might prove to be counterproductive by hampering their mental and thinking development. Furthermore, there are chances that tender minds could either become timid, incapable of leading a life independently,  or rebellious, seeking revenge on others for the hardships they had to face.

In hindsight, disputes aside, it is highly essential for young ones to learn to live within certain defined social and legal boundaries, and there should be no compromise on this, or this might precipitate into a chaotic society.

Adult youths are often called up for working for the development of communities. Do you think they should work voluntarily or should they get paid? Give your opinion in no less than 250 words."

"Adult youths are often called up for working for the development of communities. Do you think they should work voluntarily or should they get paid? Give your opinion in no less than 250 words."

These days, there is a profound public discourse over the issue whether young adults should be encouraged to render free community services, or will it be appropriate  to compensate them. The matter has evoked conflicting views that swing between morality and practicality; thus, needing a deeper analysis.

The proposal of engaging young adults in voluntary services finds its inspiration from that fact that humans have nearly abandoned the very tenets of philanthropy and have become apathetic due to their newly embraced attitude of  seeking monetary gains in return for anything they do. In such times, encouraging young people, when they are either about to step into, or have just taken up professional assignments,  to undertake such endeavors can help inculcate feelings of selflessness, devotion and empathy towards the plight of the needy in the community, and show them the righteous path.

Moreover, offering voluntary services also help the young adults pay back something to the society, thereby also fostering a sense of belongingness. Every individual is born and brought up in the social environment that has been afforded to them free  of cost by the community, and now when they are old enough to make contributions to their surroundings, they should reciprocate.

Nevertheless, some question the very idea of free services. They base their view on a more viable approach, and feel that when even NGOs and other relief organizations are receiving colossal donations in the name of voluntary work, why are the young adults being asked to make sacrifices. Additionally, monetary compensation would appeal these people and encourage them to continue free work.

In conclusion, I would rather opt for a middle path. Even though youth should be encouraged to engage in community endeavors as volunteers, in some cases, they should be compensated monetarily.

Nowadays many people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons for this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Nowadays many people want to buy famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. What are the reasons for this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

In concurrent times, a lobby opines that a majority of consumers like to have rich lifestyles by using branded clothes, investing into luxury cars, and many more to maintain their social status. In this essay, I will elucidate some causes for the same and provide the justified opinion about why it is an unfavorable evolution.

To embark upon, a school of thought propounds that with the increase in disposable income, the tastes and preferences have also changed by virtue of which many want to invest into big brands to upgrade their social status: it helps in boosting their confidence as they look affluent. Nowadays, as a plethora of brands - targeting a varied income strata - are easily available all across the world and they provide items at affordable prices, it gives people a vast variety to choose from, and they like to spend on the quality products as these are more durable.

Nevertheless, this trend is increasing the gap between the affluent and the destitutes as one can easily identify the difference by just looking at a person, and numerous people are wary of this, and thus avoid going to the social gatherings.

Also, this is augmenting the peer pressure, pushing many young children to force their parents to provide them with luxury items, or resorting to indulging in unlawful activities to attain their goals. A recent survey revealed that juvenile crime has increased and the reason for that is youngsters seeking money to satisfy their craving to buy expensive things.

Overall, famous brands have improved the lifestyle of people drastically; however, one cannot ignore the drawback it has on the society which is pressuring parents and they have to sacrifice their own needs to fulfil demand of their wards.

Global warming is one of the biggest threats humans face in the 21st Century and sea levels are continuing to rise at alarming rates. What problems are associated with this and what are some possible solutions

Global warming is one of the biggest threats humans face in the 21st Century and sea levels are continuing to rise at alarming rates. What problems are associated with this and what are some possible solutions

Undeniably, warming of the planet has fetched humongous challenges for mankind, and one of the steepest in rising levels of seas. This has posed serious threats to society, making it imperative to determine plausible mechanisms to mitigate the situation.

There are a myriad of challenges being generated by this evolution: coastal areas are on the verge of being submerged, and many have already experienced this impact, which is bound to disrupt life in all forms. The cities and towns need to be shifted farther inland that means relocating industry, households and even farming. This relocation is not only costly in terms of money but also time, and the domestic economies are  going to be exposed to disparate challenges and eventually suffer.

Similarly, this phenomenon is also going to cause seawater penetration of  fresh groundwater aquifers, turning them saline too, and unfit for human consumption. The domino effect of this will be felt in the agricultural sector - that heavily relies on such fresh water sources, impacting the food production and sending food prices rocketing.

However, the reversal of this situation is not beyond imagination even though it may be an uphill task. Some experts suggest umpteen solutions: fuel efficient modes of transport should be opted for and shift to greener forms of transportation should be prioritized. Moreover, the state can take a step forward by incentivising and compensating those complying by greener norms and those not switching should be penalized, either in monetary or nonmonetary terms such as in the form of de-licensing business rights.

Overall, high levels of seawater are undoubtedly going to disrupt human life,  but the remedies are not too far, instead merely a step away: implementation of prudent solutions  to evade such catastrophe can go a long way.

Some people feel unsafe when they are in public and at home. What are the possible causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Some people feel unsafe when they are in public and at home. What are the possible causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Some people feel unsafe when they are in public and at home. What are the possible causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Possible causes of people feeling unsafe when in public and home

  • Outdoors

    • accidents on roads,

    • Crime

    • Natural disasters like cyclones which affect people when they are out on streets

    • Weather related issues

  •  Indoors

    • Fear of robberies, especially for those in their  twilight years and living alone

    • Natural calamities like earthquakes

    • Accidents like fire which affect people indoors

    • Heightened stress about paranormal activity due to increased viewing of such media

    • Forms of Entertainment, like

  • Solutions

    • Deployment of appropriate law enforcement  personnel to render safety

    • Raising awareness and training about the ways to save oneself while facing a extreme natural condition

    • Making media more responsible in its reporting

Of late, a bizarre trend has been surfacing across the world where many have started fearing for their safety, regardless of their physical location. This can be  attributed to several causes, but this phenomenon can be addressed by adopting certain prudent measures.

To start with, there are umpteen reasons contributing to apprehensions about security. The most prominent of them is unrestricted and surfeit reporting of fateful events resulting from natural calamities such as earthquakes and hurricanes, and man made disasters like fires, has made people feel insecure both when indoors and outdoors. To corroborate, a survey carried out at the global level revealed startling information, wherein most respondents admitted that it was the overzealous and detailed graphical representation of devastation and casualties caused by these disasters, by television and print media, that heightened  anxiety and fueled a sense of unease.

Similarly, another conspicuous source of this nervousness is undeniably the  rising crime that has made roads and alleys, and even homes  vulnerable to unlawful activities like mugging, robberies, rapes and murders, to name a few. These factors have really worried people and have made them overcautious about their safety  and wellbeing.

Nevertheless, there are certain judicious steps  that can be taken to counter/surmount/overcome this challenge and ease panic. The media houses should be  reigned in and obligated to act responsibly and choose social welfare over commercial benefits. It should be made to act prudently and avoid spreading alarm. Moreover, the strength and powers of security agencies should be incremented so that they can act proactively and swiftly and quell criminal activities before they occur.

Overall, the genesis of this awful situation lies in hasty and unwise reporting and dearth of sufficient strength of police officers, nonetheless responsible reportage and deployment  of adequate police force  can pervade positive sentiments.

While studying some students take weekend or evening jobs to help with expenditure. How do you feel about this? What are the drawbacks & benefits of such a decision.

Drawback

- Distraction

- Dropping out of studies

Benefits

- Financial independence and boosts

- Gain exposure of the professional working environment

Nowadays, several learners have developed a propensity to obtain part-time gainful employment, in the form of evening or weekend jobs to meet their expenses. This, although has a potential to cause distraction, it allows youngsters to learn about financial independence and taking responsibilities.

In concurrent times, numerous learners have been observed joining some kind of temporary work, in the evenings or at the weekends. This  phenomenon  has been hailed as one laden with a plethora of benefits despite having certain pitfalls.

To start with, this trend is thought to be weighed down by a couple of shortcomings: causing distraction in studies and making youngsters arrogant. Although the instances have been rare/sporadic, some learners tend to go astray due to being either overburdened with work, or lured by money, which in extreme cases pushes them to abandon studies. Similarly, many also stop paying heed to the advice  and guidance of their parents since they feel that they are no more dependent on the latter.

Having said that, this newly evolving propensity has little room for pessimism, as per various studies conducted to evaluate the impact of working along with gaining education on the pupils, which suggest that instead of causing a burden, taking up a job aids youngsters in not only experiencing certain level of financial independence - where  they do not have to rely on their parents for their personal expenses, but also augments their self-esteem and eventually their confidence.

Furthermore, this also brings young individuals face to face with an unprecedented reward, an opportunity to gain exposure of the professional working environment which they will have to embrace/join once they are done with their academic pursuits. The knowledge gained through such endeavours helps youngsters prepare themselves better for their professional life by equipping them with appropriate interpersonal skills.

Overall, controversies apart, young learners taking up temporary jobs carries numerous upsides which easily exceed flaws phenomenally. Therefore, it will be in the interest of young students if they engage in part-time work.

Nowadays organizations are setting up factories in countries that are different from where their head office is situated. Are the advantages more than the disadvantages?

Nowadays organizations are setting up factories in countries that are different from where their head office is situated. Are the advantages more than the disadvantages?

In contemporary times, the business units are spreading to various parts of the world. This phenomenon carries benefits and drawbacks, but it remains to be seen which aspect overshadows the other.

To embark upon discussion, the advent of multinational organizations and global brands has created an upsurge in the bundle of opportunities. The establishment of their branches is advantageous to both the host and the country of origin – the creation of employment opportunities in the former and inflow of money into the latter, eventually boosting both the economy. This will subsequently help in alleviating poverty from the developing nations and promote prosperity, grant them free infrastructure and increase the choice of goods and services. Local populace will gain a wider choice of goods and at prices relatively lower than the imported substitutes. Profits of these plants will be subject to local taxes in most cases, which will provide a valuable source of revenue for the destination governments.

Having said that, this notion is associated with some drawbacks – unemployment in the native country; closure of manufacturing units as they are shifting to the international market for cheap labor, resources and profits, will cause joblessness. Products manufactured by multinationals are often considered superior in quality and more affordable. This will cause local establishments to go out of business, killing the home-grown entrepreneurial skills. Consequently, making poor nations dependent on companies and vulnerable to interference in the governance. This could bring back colonolism.

To conclude, despite choosing to construct the plants in different locations from the headquarters of having certain pitfalls, the advantages easily overshadowed them. This will create employment bags, infrastructure and also allow companies to exploit cheap labor and resources in the host country.

Today more people are traveling than ever before. Why is this the case? What are the benefits of traveling for the traveler?

Today more people are traveling than ever before. Why is this the case? What are the benefits of traveling for the traveler?

In contemporary times, traveling has become ubiquitous. There are several reasons behind this phenomenon. This essay shall discuss some of these as well as various benefits associated with it.

The world is fast becoming highly globalized, offering more exposure to foreign cultures. People have become aware of far-off destinations as they consume media from other countries, thereby influencing their perceptions and coaxing them to visit  those destinations. Moreover, many can afford journeying, by virtue of higher disposable incomes, pursuing many to undertake voyages to exotic locations to experience once in a lifetime adventure, and affording them the privilege  to flaunt in front of their peers.

Also, cheaper airfares that have made flying economically viable for middle-income strata are also fueling this phenomenon; previously one had to pay out of their nose while undertaking such an endeavor.  Additionally, youngsters are jumping onto this bandwagon to experience worldly ways before they embark on their further academic or professional pursuits.

This evolution has helped fetch a prominent benefit: it is helping in broadening horizons of those engaging in such endeavors, letting them comprehend the nuances of different cultures and customs. Owing to this, they have become more tolerant and appreciative of the diversity in the society. It also aids in instilling a sense of civic duties among those who have returned from abroad. For instance, in a survey conducted by the Hindustan times, those visiting other countries reported keen awareness about keeping their surroundings clean, and did not indulge in rampant littering as was observed among the rest of the group.

Overall, the newly evolved tendency of globe-trotting is not only an enjoyable experience but also an enriching one and a greater number of people have started exploring the world around them than in any other epoch.

Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic? What are the benefits and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places?

Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic? What are the benefits and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places?

Rising inclination among those wedded to the idea of exploring untrodden paths to gain unprecedented excitement out of leisure trips is taking them to  untamed and pristine locations, they are even prepared  to face the hostile environment. This, however, has both the pros and cons for such individuals.

Exploring unknown and remote realms of the planet help the travellers satisfy their lust for adventure; address their adrenaline rush; and also fetch unorthodox experience. These places, with their unpredictable conditions present a challenge- not usually experienced in conventional tourist locations- which upon overcoming fuels a sense of achievement and satisfaction, thereby quenching the thirst for doing something unique that has not been tried by others. Many can also drive an enriching experience of braving the inhospitable climate and surroundings and thus earning immortal memories.

Similarly, another major benefit that visitors to far-flung areas can obtain is the first hand experience of the unspoiled and immaculate nature in all its glory such encounters make them enlightened about the environment and its relevance for the planet. Numerous accounts shared by those who have undertaken journeys to such locations elucidate the fact that on returning back home, most have become more responsible towards nature.

However, those visiting uninhabitable conditions and areas are exposed to several hazards, as many suggest. Being away from civilization makes them vulnerable to unexpected twists and turns, which in extreme conditions could even become life threatening. For instance, falling sick, or meeting an accident could result in serious consequences due to absence of appropriate medical help.

Overall, embarking upon journeys to harsh environments and corners offer exciting opportunities to the Backpackers though the experiences can turn sour if one encounters unannounced incidents. Hence, one must be prudent about choosing such places before travelling to them.

In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of ageing populations.

In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of ageing populations.

Affluent societies have been witnessing an although commendable  phenomenon, which have also become a source of unease, people are living longer, well into their advanced age. This could have serious implications not only for people but also for society as well, which makes it imperative to discover plausible way outs.

The direct calamity of such an evolution are the individuals themselves as they are expected to survive longer, there is a great probability that in their autumn they might not enjoy a quality life, by virtue of retiring from their work and becoming exposed to financial constraints, and been inflicted by disease and ailments that catch up with the age. Consequently, they might have to spend their twilight years being dependent on others, making things traumatic for them.

Similarly, society also remains unaffected by such an evolution, and will have to bear the burden of supporting the elderly populace both financially and morally, in the form of providing old age grants, retirement homes, and medical rehabilitation support. This will impose humongous pressure on taxpayers, the only source of public money.

Moving to remedies, even though these problems cannot be comprehensively eleminative, mitigation is surely possible. The governments should either raise the retirement age and let the aged workers engage in non physical work, or should draw a plan to engage senior citizens in some kind of community work and compensate them with stipend so that the later do not only stay occupied but also confident.

Overall, even though developments and science have yielded rich dividends in the form of prolonged life span, they have also brought along certain hidden adverse effects which could make life miserable for the elderly and impose over the society. Therefore, governments should intervene and take prudent steps.

Many old buildings protected by law are part of a nation’s history. Some people think they should be knocked down and replaced by news ones. How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

Many old buildings protected by law are part of a nation’s history. Some people think they should be knocked down and replaced by news ones. How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

Many old buildings protected by law are part of a nation’s history

It is important to conserve ancient structures

  • They mirror achievements of ancestors in the field of architecture and building technologies - some knowledge can be used in contemporary times

  • They represent rich heritage and are a good way to inform the current generation about their past

  • They also are considered as the face of a city, something that is used as a medium to lure tourists.

NO? History should not present hurdles in the way of progress

  • Old structures needs colossal investments for maintenance

  • It is hard to recondition these since material used in construction is hard to locate

  • These structures are space intensive, but modern concepts rely on compact sizes- help accommodate more populace and businesses

  • Modern concepts rely more on eco-friendly building techniques, structure arrangement, and material, and can provide efficient energy use mechanism

  • These structures are not safe for occupancy and despite heavy maintenance, they are vulnerable to collapse and extending relief in structures can surely be an onerous task.

  •

In concurrent times, when there is a rising need to accommodate  dramatically expanding populations and businesses by providing them with space and money efficient solutions, a common suggestion has surfaced that old infrastructure should be razed and replaced with modern construction. However, there is strong dissent on this issue.

Those in favor of demolishing old structures profess that these require colossal investments of invaluable financial resources for refurbishment, and still do not provide an enduring way out for long term, by virtue of being space and energy intensive. However, contemporary construction concepts offer promises for more practical answers to the incrementing needs as developing new infrastructure will use a fraction of money allocated for maintenance of aging buildings, and will be economical in all aspects: space and energy.

Notwithstanding the former opinion, it is extremely essential to protect such heritage as it mirrors the glorious past of a society, in the form of achievements in architecture and building technology that appropriately address local needs as per the climate, geography and socio-economic arrangements. These can also provide important cues to contemporary architects and engineers. For example, conserving pagodas in Japan has helped civil engineers learn about designing earthquake resistant buildings and skyscrapers.

Moreover, these edifices carry a great nostalgic value rather than just being piles of concrete and bricks, and act as the face of a city. They are the only reasons for alien tourists to undertake journeys to such locations. Undeniably cities like Jaipur, despite not being industrial towns, are thriving simply because of millions visiting to see ancient buildings.

Overall, it is necessary to find a panacea that creates balance between responding to the current demands and conserving the legacy of the past. Therefore, governments should act prudently and consider changes wherever possible.

Some people think that newspapers are the best way to learn about current events. However, others believe that they can learn news better through other media.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people think that newspapers are the best way to learn about current events

There is nowadays an eternal debate doing rounds to decide as to which medium of informing the masses about contemporary issues surrounding them. While a school of thought asserts that newspapers happen to be the most formidable means of obtaining information about the tropical happenings, others favour alternative sources.

On the one hand, there is tremendous following for the newspapers as this medium is hailed as a platform that delivers authentic information that is duly verified by a competent editorial team for its genuineness. Each detail is substantiated from reliable resources to confirm its validity, and only after a thorough brainstorming it is approved for reporting. Moreover, it has also been seen that editors act extremely responsibly and many a times tend to censor the details that are incendiary and have a potential to galvanize social discord and unrest.

Similarly, this conventional mode is admired for its all-embracing detailing and analysis. The well-versed and committed journalists spend time in covering an event from all possible angles and sometimes even delve deeper to derive exhaustive facts about an occurrence, affording readers a chance to inform themselves comprehensively and also appreciate the gravity of matter more clearly.
